Any referrals to build a roofdeck in Chicago? Mine won't be built to code (requiring both an in/egress point), and I haven't found many resources for DIY without an architect/engineer's involvement.

Hey annieo - Room and Board does have their sample clearance sale the day after xmas. Advantage of the Oak Brook store is that their tax is cheaper than the R&B in the City and in Skokie. I've found better deals at the C&B outlet in Naperville than in Chicago since it's larger and they also have furniture and rugs, but it's definitely hit or miss. Chiasso has warehouse sales 2x a year in the West Loop. Look out for sale notice in AT. Another great source is Domicile Furniture. They also have an outlet in Evanston, but it's only open on the weekend. Have fun!!

How about one of these "C" tables? If you have room to pull your couch out from the wall a bit, you can position the table to just cover the damage, and you'd have extra space to display something, or use it to hold drinks and other objects. I used urbanspan.com last year which "specializes" in lofts. It's a good place to start because you can register and view photos according to neighborhood and price range for free.
It's true, people have taken a lot of liberties in desciption of places as "lofts". I worked with Irene Morse at urbanspan to define what I was looking for (a "true" loft as opposed to apartments with loft-like features) and she helped me find a great place in the West Loop.
