Go bold in a couple of places. Deep Green would make the cabinetry pop, being a complement to the reds in that really-nice-please-keep-it cabinetry.

Plum tart (Sweet tart crust + custard filling + fresh plums in sugar syrup on top)

I really like the colors that are on there now... but agree that you need something to make it pop. In general I would leave the trim large as is, but add a discrete accent color in small doses. Little pops of dark spruce green or a deep teal (perhaps in the cornice over the windows, front door, maybe some planter boxes) would accent and enliven that pale orange/peach color. For a complementary pallet, a deep rust accent color would be interesting too.

It appears that the second island is taking the place of the old 1970's breakfast nook in these examples. Except here, the "table" now has storage.

Although the result is okay, the formica could have been replaced with a sheet of real wood veneer instead, preserving the mid-century look of the piece. Removing the formica is tricky but possible.

I love that fireplace - it's just cluttered. Remove all the stuff! Add a modern grate in a pewter or nickel finish. Paint the adjoining walls a lighter putty color to match the grout, so the stone doesn't contrast so strongly, creating a monotone color scheme. The dark stain on the mantel also contrasts too strongly - try replacing the wood with something bleached or blond in the same tones as the stone. Think a pebbly beach with driftwood. Add a black and white photo above the mantel.

Think about the colors in with Delft Blue or Flowblue pottery.

I like the idea of white cabinets and appliances (use appliance paint). I might also paint the countertop (Rustoleum have new products to do both cabinets and laminate countertops). I would paint the cabinets and walls first, then decide if the countertops work or not.

The suggestions for buttery yellow on the walls would work great - really making that cobalt pop out even more.

Pull-out, full size outdoor shelving mounted on wheels and/or on a suspended rail system (think barn door rail) - sort of like a pull out kitchen pantry. That way you can hide the storage but make good use of the space.

Go dark -- you have plenty of light in this room. Keep the countertops - they are good and you can work with them. Paint the cabinets a charcoal (or maybe even chocolate or deeper mocha color) - to balance the dark countertop color. Add real slate flooring. Ditch the blinds unless you need them for functional reasons and add a nice patterned valance with some pops of turkey red or deep orange, mixed with the green. Spray paint the dishwasher and other appliances with a gunmetal spray.

I agree with dark sage green, not too vibrant but natural looking. Accent it with pops of a deep red throughout the room for something lively - or greys and charcoal for something more muted.
