Many years ago, my landlord got arrested (never knew why), and while he was locked up, no one came around to collect the rent. I kept each month's check in a separate account, but no one ever asked for them, and with my landlord locked up, I didn't know who should get them. (I sent the first one to his address, but it was returned unopened.) So I spent my last six months there living rent-free which for someone on a very limited budget was wonderful. Well, this is depressing -- my provider is next to last. I have Verizon DSL, which is OK, but I'd far prefer FIOS. Alas, that's not an option in my neighborhood, and I just hatehatehate Comcast, although lately I've been reconsidering whether I can continue to hate it, but still use its services. So I'm kind of stuck, and you don't know the meaning of stuck until you try to download an hour-long TV show on DSL. . . Ranking ISPs for the Best Netflix Experience, From Around the Globe |

Not surprisingly, you neglected Dorchester, Boston's most diverse and populous neighborhood. It's home to UMass-Boston and the JFK Library. It has great restaurants like Tavolo, D Bar, Ashmont Grill, The Ledge, and 224 Boston, cool coffee shops like Flat Black, marvelous independently owned shops, and open artists' studios. Parking isn't an ordeal, Malibu Beach is a off-leash great dog run, and Red Line hits most of the main spots, transportation-wise. Oh, and it's actually still relatively affordable, especially when compared to the Back Bay and South End. A Renter's Life in Boston: The Inside Scoop Apartment Therapy Renters Guide |

I'm an easy waker/multi-tasker. I tend to wake up 15 minutes before the alarm, and use that time to check my email and the day's headlines on my phone. Once the alarm goes off -- cool jazz on jazzradio.com on my Squeezebox -- I'm ready for the day. What's Your Morning Alarm Style? |

We don't have kids, but we have an insanely photogenic Cocker Spaniel as our official holiday card model, and our families and friends seem to enjoy it. (Last year, I wanted to do a holiday card with my girlfriend as Mary, me as Joseph, and our puppyboy as the baby Jesus, but my girlfriend was not having it!) I bought an iPad several months ago to replace my trusty old iBook G4. With an Apple wireless keyboard, it can pretty much do what I did with my laptop -- and of course, it's a lot faster and lighter to carry around. (And when I don't have a physical keyboard, the virtual version is good enough.) To me, it's all about having the right apps to get the job done. And with a combination of Dropbox, Cloud On, Pages, Evernote, and Air Display (I'm a freelance writer), I'm getting everything done just fine. (And for play, I've got Spotify, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, and Kindle app.) Can a Tablet Really Replace My Laptop? It's Complicated... |

I just received a Bose SoundLink (smaller version of the Air) for my birthday, and it's awesome. It spends most of its time in my office on a bookshelf, but it's easy to cart from room to room as needed. Bluetooth Speakers Are the New Bookshelf Stereos for the Living Room |

I have a neighbor who has lived next door to me for years. He is not a chatty sort, and when I say hello, he seems like he'd rather endure a rectal exam than speak. But he plows my driveway in every snowstorm, and recently lent me his electric clippers when I decided to tackle my out of control hedges with hand clippers. It was an extremely humid day, and he took the time to show me how to use them so that I could get the job done without dismembering anything or killing passersby. So, if he doesn't care for mindless chitchat, that's fine with me. Time and again, he has helped me without my having to ask, and that, to me, is the definition of a great neighbor. You've got a point, DL20, but I'd rather be known as the penny pincher than the dope who is always expected to subsidize everyone else's dinner and drinks. I've had occasions when my part of the bill was $25, yet somehow I've wound up paying $50. Goodbye to all that! Stop Paying Too Much While Splitting the Dinner Bill |

I used to "straighten up" my apartment when the parents came to visit -- books, posters, photos -- anything that would out me to Mom and Dad. On their second visit, even though I wasn't out yet, I just didn't bother. The "Girls on the Loose" magnet stayed on the fridge, the "Dykes to Watch Out For" poster stayed in the bathroom. And that was the day when my apartment truly became MY apartment. Self-Censored Decor: Hiding a Few Items When the 'Rents Visit |

If I left this on, my dog would spend the entire workday barking at and charging the TV. (Running dogs, in particular, seem to set him off.) He'd make so much noise, I'd be kicked out of the neighborhood! Pet Friendly Programming on DogTV: Leave a Little Love On |
