Well, this is depressing -- my provider is next to last. I have Verizon DSL, which is OK, but I'd far prefer FIOS. Alas, that's not an option in my neighborhood, and I just hatehatehate Comcast, although lately I've been reconsidering whether I can continue to hate it, but still use its services. So I'm kind of stuck, and you don't know the meaning of stuck until you try to download an hour-long TV show on DSL. . .

YIKES.

As I'm heading home to see the family for the holidays, that Geneva Model XS speaker would be the perfect traveling companion for my iPad -- and my sanity!

Are there really people out there who would want speakers that look like The Gimp from "Pulp Fiction"? No thanks!

I bought an iPad several months ago to replace my trusty old iBook G4. With an Apple wireless keyboard, it can pretty much do what I did with my laptop -- and of course, it's a lot faster and lighter to carry around. (And when I don't have a physical keyboard, the virtual version is good enough.) To me, it's all about having the right apps to get the job done. And with a combination of Dropbox, Cloud On, Pages, Evernote, and Air Display (I'm a freelance writer), I'm getting everything done just fine. (And for play, I've got Spotify, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, and Kindle app.)

Having said all that, I'd snap up a Microsoft Word app in a heartbeat. Fingers crossed for 2013!

Bluetooth does not need an internet connection. So if I'm streaming my own music from my phone or tablet (or listening to a downloaded Spotify playlist) on my Bose, the wifi is off, unless I'm using my device for something else at the same time. It also saves battery life. I think the Airport Express solution might require wifi, though I'm not sure.

I have a neighbor who has lived next door to me for years. He is not a chatty sort, and when I say hello, he seems like he'd rather endure a rectal exam than speak. But he plows my driveway in every snowstorm, and recently lent me his electric clippers when I decided to tackle my out of control hedges with hand clippers. It was an extremely humid day, and he took the time to show me how to use them so that I could get the job done without dismembering anything or killing passersby. So, if he doesn't care for mindless chitchat, that's fine with me. Time and again, he has helped me without my having to ask, and that, to me, is the definition of a great neighbor.

I used to "straighten up" my apartment when the parents came to visit -- books, posters, photos -- anything that would out me to Mom and Dad. On their second visit, even though I wasn't out yet, I just didn't bother. The "Girls on the Loose" magnet stayed on the fridge, the "Dykes to Watch Out For" poster stayed in the bathroom. And that was the day when my apartment truly became MY apartment.

If I left this on, my dog would spend the entire workday barking at and charging the TV. (Running dogs, in particular, seem to set him off.) He'd make so much noise, I'd be kicked out of the neighborhood!
