Wasteful, and not that new. Do an image search for "needle bath" to see showers from a century ago with a similar concept.

This is my favorite thread.

In the early 1970s I had a friend who lived with her artist parents in a big loft in Soho (NYC). Instead of bedrooms, she and her brother had tents. They looked like circus tents and were made of cloth suspended from the ceiling by wires.

My best friend's father built a stage at the end of her bedroom, complete with a curtain, wings, etc. We used to write plays and put them on with our brothers.

I have an idea: Instead of spending the money on an irrelevant, badly written advice column, HIRE A COPY EDITOR! None of your writers can punctuate for crap, especially this new one.

Sit tight for a bit. MCM will seem "grandma" again in a few years and older styles will look fresh and radical.

In the meantime, check out 16th century Dutch style, including American Dutch Colonial. If you live anywhere near the Brooklyn Museum, visit their Schenck houses. The style mixes hand-hewn wood with blue-and-white Delft pottery.

How very strange. I don't much enjoy alcohol, and it sometimes gives me migraines, so I don't drink much--maybe one drink a month or so--and I usually refuse alcohol when it's offered. Nobody's ever given me a hard time about it. They just say "Can I get you something else, then? Water, juice, coffee?"

If my friends tried to make me drink when I didn't want to, I would ask them to stop. If they persisted, I would probably find other friends.

If you are registering for flatware, buy one setting and eat with it before you commit. Make sure you actually put all the pieces in your mouth.

We didn't think to do that, and we wound up with spoons that look nice enough but feel horrible in my mouth. The bowls are too deep and there's always a little smear of soup or yogurt or whatever left, unless I turn the spoon upside down and lick it. It's revolting.

We love our John Kelly J1 daybed:
http://www.aboutsofa.com/2009/06/john-kelly-sofa-daybed/

It's elegant, comfortable (the futon-ish cushion wore out after a few years and we replaced it with foam), and so useful! Tons of storage, a handsome sofa that transforms easily into a guest bed. It may look a little dated right now--he designed the series in the early 90s--but I have no doubt it will cycle back into fashion again and eventually become a well-regarded antique.

We bought it when we had a long combo living room/dining room. We didn't want a sofa in the middle turning its back to the dining room. We put the daybed in the middle, where it made the two rooms distinct, but also combined them. Now we have a separate dining room, so it no longer serves as a hinge, but it's still a beautiful and incredibly useful piece of furniture.

@marissa kephart beautiful house!

I prefer a separate kitchen, so I don't have to look at the cooking mess and can limit the noise and smells. But #1 is lovely.

It would be terrible for square boxes too, because the perforations would make it squish easily, so it wouldn't protect the contents.

Pink wasn't considered a feminine color until the early 20th century. In the 19th century and before, blue was the color for girls and young boys were often dressed in pink.

Ammonia-based cleaners are good for gold and silver and some gemstones, but they can really hurt soft or organic-based material like opal, pearl, coral, so be careful if you use them.

Never use bleach on jewelry, even plain metal jewelry. The chlorine can make the metal brittle.

I always use ammonia and dishwashing liquid on things like light fixtures, with a big dish brush. Seems to work fine for me. But the denture tablet trick sounds good too.
