Just commissioned my Dad to build me the parsons desk. Can't wait to see how it turns out. I just bought what looks like the exact same couch from IKEA (the Karlstaad) and I love it (in gray).

No Room for a Tree? 10 DIY Modern Holiday Alternatives
12/1/11 10:53 AM

10 years ago when I was living alone with my two small boys we were told that we would not be able to have a 'real' Christmas tree in our apartment building. They were so disappointed but I told them that I would think of something. Shopped around but artificial trees were too expensive. I then remembered my dad had a roll of leftover chicken wire he had used to keep the birds from landing on his house. I took that leftover chicken wire and fabricated a 6 foot tree which I covered in lights, tinsel and decorations. The effect was stunningly beautiful and the boys thought it even better than the real thing. We still have that tree and use it every year. It has grown to 8 feet and is so beautiful we wouldn't trade it for anything. It stands as a symbol to me and to my boys that imagination and the will to find a way can result in something pretty wonderful. Necessity being the mother of invention proved once again.

I cannot understand why this room is not winning. Seems obvious to me. I didn't even have to think about it. It is a beautiful room with wonderful colour.

OK, I love your place but I can't favorite you because we are in competition. The funny thing is that I used BM Pigeon gray in my front hall and then used Sidewalk gray and painted stripes exactly like yours throughout my entire living room and I love it. Too funny.

Thank you all for the lovely compliments. The painting of the flowers was scored at.........wait for it..................Rona Hardware store. Saw it.....had to have it. Just goes to show that if you only buy or collect those things that really speak to you and that you find beautiful and fascinating to look at then everything tends to flow together nicely.

Beautiful, calm, elegant and cozy! Love that you are working with elements that you already have. Stunning room with those blues and golds and the chandelier is wonderful. Ahhhhhhhh, deep sigh.

Christmas Only. Maybe a little bit for Hallowe'en but hardly. I did just buy a fat, black giant spider though. I love him with his beady little red eyes and he will be resting in my living room on my giant pink shell until Hallowe'en is over.,

Which Holidays Do You Decorate For?

Absolutely no curtains please. The windows are fantastic and from what I can make out not a privacy issue. It would look bizarre to have curtains on the long, high windows. Just leave them. I would only put a roman shade on the bottom two windows if and only if... you needed it for privacy. Decorate with, as a previous commentor said, a beautiful sculpture or vase. Curtains would look ridiculous and take away from the dramatic look of these windows and the staircase.
