What a great idea! We have some vintage-style Dr. Pepper bottles that I have been looking to use as well as a semi-neglected houseplant... a perfect combo!

I find that doing a Google Image search for what I'm looking for (i.e. "crochet baby blanket) will help me find links to pages with similar items. There is also a book called "The Ultimate Sourcebook of Knitting and Crochet Stitches" published by Reader's Digest that is the best book I have found for knitting and crochet techniques, stitches and edges from beginner to advanced. I bet you could find a copy at your local library. You can look through the types of stitches and come up with your own look. There are many textured stitches that could be combined and done in your colors to create a funky/modern blanket.

Another trick for blood on clothing- saliva! It's a little gross, but when I worked at a bridal shop our seamstress taught us that if you dab some of your saliva on your own blood stains, it helps break down the blood and you can usually remove the rest with regular detergent. This works best with fresher stains. Very handy little trick... we even called some brides back to have them come spit on stains (not an easy sell, by the way!).

There is a DIY knife block basically consisting of a wooden box filled with wooden skewers. You could easily build it to fit you aesthetic and remove the skewers to be cleaned or replaced. Here is a link to a very basic version...
