@Emmi, There was no mention in the article of these being green. Also, using wood does not have to mean deforestation. There are tree farms that are certainly better for the environment than almost any plastic producing factory. I think, however, the main point here is that these are more beautiful and durable than their plastic counterparts. I love the boggle set!

I do the wi-fi password too. I figure, anyone I'm comfortable enough to let in my house, I'm comfortable enough to let on my wi-fi. I do change the password fairly regularly, so I'm not worried about a random neighbor or maintenance person using it.

I've used neighbor's open wi-fi on sparing occasions like waiting for service to be hooked up, or during a power outage (I lived in an apartment where one building would lose power but the next wouldn't). I can't see doing this as a long-term solution, however, as I suspect it's illegal and at the very least, unethical. I did live close enough to a starbucks at one time to access their wi-fi on clear days. I was a regular customer so didn't feel bad about jumping on it for occasional use.

I use my phone on airplane mode as an alarm clock. Does a fan count as "Tech"? If so, then I have two pieces of tech in my bed room. I definitely understand it in roommate situations, but alone or as a family, I'd rather enjoy time with them and have a peaceful bedroom. I'm also lucky enough not to have to work a lot of hours outside the office, as long as I check in once or twice in the evening, I'm usually golden.

@TIAMAT_THE_RED Unfortunately, I live in an area that I don't feel safe leaving the windows open while I sleep. And, it's Texas, so even cooling off at night during the summer sometimes leaves it in the 90's some nights. It is good to know that everyone else faces similar problems, it just frustrating that one thing accounts for that much of my total energy use. One missed adjustment on the thermostat can double my energy use on a day if I'm not careful.

My biggest thing is climate control (well over 35% of my usage). Anything I can do to cut down on having to use heat and AC pretty much pays off.

I think the idea is to continually rebuild elements of the house. I will only break down, if it is abandoned.

I've taken days off to watch the tourney a couple of times, and also worked from home once to do it. I'm off this Friday, but will be traveling. First time in about 5 years that I won't be home to watch the first couple of days of the tournament live. Don't really have the option of streaming at work either. Pretty bummed about it. I can't really imagine taking a day off to watch anything other than this. I've rescheduled by an hour or two for some things though (championship parade, opening day, etc).

Elaine, I thought the same thing. I'm hoping it's just the perspective used that's making it look like the chairs can't be pulled out.

I have an Android tablet that I'll read on in a pinch, but my Kindle is my go to device for it. It's lighter, easier to read, and the battery life is incredible. The two are complimentary devices for me.

On sharing contacts, it will also send over whatever nickname Siri calls you. So if you have Siri calling Rock God as in their commercials you may not want that to go out to business contacts.

My TV is definitely too large for my living room from an aesthetic standpoint. However, I frequently watch a smaller TV (that is the same brand/similar model) from a similar distance and it's just too small for some things. As has been mentioned, size of the room and surroundings are important, but so is content.

I'm with franco.barbaro. I've managed to clean up my photos pretty well thanks to their visual nature, and documents too. But with music, I've only been able to clean up the really obvious duplicates (exact file names, etc.). Anyone no of anything that can actually identify a song and rename it?

I think its important to note what these comparisons are made against (I haven't checked the sources). For instance an LED TV is a great upgrade from a CRT but less of an upgrade from a "traditional" LCD. I considered upgrading to one until I saw how negligible the difference was and considered the resources used to produce and deliver it. The most energy efficient thing that can be done in most cases is to simply hold on to what you've got longer.

The only light I have is from the smoke detector. I used to have all kinds of tech on a desk in my bedroom, now the only thing I have in there is the bed and a fan. I use my phone in airplance mode as an alarm clock, but it only comes on when the alarm is going off and I'm getting up anyway.

In addition to too many lights on stuff, why do so many things have a clock. Cable box, microwave, oven, thermostat, etc all using power and emitting light just to display the time.

Thank you David! I was thinking many of the same things when reading the article. I have a pretty solid multi-monitor set-up at work, but cheaped out when buying for home and am a little less satisfied (I still love my set-up at home, just when compared it's slightly lacking).

Great Article! Not syncing with non-apple devices is the killer for me. it's great when I'm on my mac or my iPhone but when I'm on my windows laptop or my Xoom I'm out of luck. Not to mention work. I would love to have the clean integration of an Apple solution, but this article does a fantastic job of pointing out the reason that I can't transition from google services.

I think the problem is that we are being more productive. If my back of the napkin calculations are correct we're producing a total of about 155 hours of 1950's labor while only getting paid for about 80 hours worth of 1950's wages. Now, I'm sure that somewhere in here, people are finding a little more time to goof off at work (like me looking this up and posting about it), but I don't think it's enough to make up that difference. There are a few other flaws in the details of my statement, but it's generally true that the ratio of production to wage has shifted unfavorably from the worker. So with that in mind, happy boss' day indeed.

I just tried this for an area I'm considering moving too. It put way too much emphasis on highways, and all but ignored major city streets. There's a major university campus that is within about a ten to fifteen minute drive and it didn't identify an of the apartments around it.
