Olive oil goes without saying, right? I have the canned beans, stock, and tomatoes. I would add dried pastas, couple of onions, and in the fridge, I have a huge jar of pre-minced garlic in water by Spice World. It is also available in roasted garlic or olive oil. My easiest meal: saute onions, tomatoes, and garlic in olive oil and toss with pasta. Done. For protein I can add white beans, or if I have it, I can add shrimp and/or prosciutto, but usually it's just the pasta with tomatoes, onions, and garlic. I love my new mattress/box spring except I had to remove the bed frame from underneath it because it was too high off the floor for me to get in, get dressed at the side, touch the floor with my feet. So my bed sits on the floor which has that college/1st apartment look. I don't have room for a platform bed and can't find a low head board that tip since it can't be affixed to the absent bed frame or hollow wall at the head of the bed... For the hair bands, get some of the plastic shower curtain rings and use them as a loop to store the scrunchies, elastics, and hairbands- I store them in a planter on the back of the toilet that matches my bathroom. Your Biggest & Smallest Bathroom Problems?? 2013 Reader Forum |

I moved into a new apartment in April that had been newly painted antique white by the landlord. My bathroom walls now have yellow-ish drip marks tracking down all the walls from steam of running the shower. I wipe the walls down from ceiling to floor with a swiffer from time to time, but it keeps on happening. It's kind of gross and I have no idea what's causing it, and if whatever it is, is on me and in my hair when I get out of the shower... I mean, eww. Sweet Vibrations is bold and fun, but not overwhelming. It really makes the trim and the art work pop. In my opinion, if you are going to embrace color, you should EMBRACE color. The rest of your choices are nice colors, but that's all they are. Nice. I think, like our clothes, like our words, our homes should say something about us. Most of the colors you have chosen are soft and tentative. Dill Pickle and Grege Avenue have a voice, but not very much depth. My apartment is very colorful, and each room has a personality, but mostly says that I am fun and you are welcome here. Help Me Choose the Right Color: 10 Paint Possibilities |

Not making your bed, however, can be healthier. A number of magazines and talk show blurbs awhile back had been commenting on a Kingston University study: if you leave your bed open to air out and dry, you can cut down on the potential for dust mites and allergens.BUT, I do feel better mentally, so if I have to leave early, I make it when I get home, or if I leave late in the morning, making my bed is the last thing I do. I keep a couple ziploc freezer bags with a flat sheet folded up in each that I keep in the freezer from May to September. When I can't get to sleep because of the heat, I just pull one out and lay on top of the bed with one on top of me. I keep 2 just in case I need the 2nd one later in the night. It's a bit shocking at first but the relief and the sleep that follows.... sigh, zzzzzzzzzz..... Here Comes Summer: How to Keep Your Cool No Matter How Hot it Gets Reader Intelligence Report |

I don't usually buy many new things, and I try to re-purpose used furniture and garage sale finds. But what really makes my eclectic style sing is, though I have searched the web for the lowest cost possible on the prints or posters I love, I pay full price for professional framing. From framing a Georgia O' Keefe cut out of a calendar to a Ramon Lombarte print I could only get from a German poster company (for $15!) to a set of watercolor postcards from a vacation in the Caribbean to a huge professional photograph taken by a friend, framing makes them all look like expensive works of art. It has allowed my apartments to evolve from a college-esque, hand me down, dumpster diving existence to a frugal but stylishly decorated, adult statement about who I am and what is important to me. I got a fantastic couch that came in three boxes! from Home Reserve. I got the three person sofa in the Avenue style, and out of the 400 plus fabrics it came in, picked a lovely waterproof moleskin in thyme. I have had 2 replace one of the support pieces, but since it has warranty, they just sent me the replacement piece free. It arrived the next day. How much was it, you ask? $328. And now they have even bigger couches available, and sectionals, too... When Your Sofa Has To Go Through the Window (And Other Small Space Conundrums) |

I bought a Home Reserve sofa for my second story apartment over 4 years ago. Until I discovered HR, the only pieces of big furniture that made it around the landing of a staircase that was not furniture friendly were a futon and a bed. The pet care fabric was everything the video described, and the occasional drink that has spilled, just beads up and wipes away. Recently, a small piece of the frame broke. I called them, and left a message on their voice mail. Fifteen minutes later, my call was returned, and the replacement piece was shipped out. They didn't even ask how it broke! They apologized for any inconvenience, confirmed my mailing address, and thanked me for me for calling. While I do not advise sitting on the arm rests, and they could be a hair deeper, it is the best piece of cheap furniture I have ever bought. Good Questions: Are Home Reserve Sofas Decent? |
