@Lorelski - Ditto. They're very clever mechanical devices, but I wouldn't want to decorate my living space with depictions of other living things struggling in futility to escape their confines, so this is no exception.

After stressing about the availability of the communal apartment sets and the nearest laundromat, I've been washing everything by hand (or plunger, really) in a plastic bin in my bathtub. Short of having an in-unit set, this is sadly the most convenient and least stressful.

It's hard to tell from the picture, but those windows look like they're set pretty deep. I could easily imagine some tall, striking statues in whatever style you like filling some of that space so it's more of a showcase than a set of awkward but impressive windows. Drapes could still be used to soften the edges, or maybe just stencil something around the borders. But covering these like they were any other windows, no, I can't see that.

@Sing, I immediately thought of Downton Abbey when I saw the bells, again because I had been watching it recently. I wish I lived in a place where this sort of discovery was even possible!

I love the doll heads. "Is your apartment toddler-proof?" You tell me, lady. You tell me.

I too would be concerned about ventillation/air quality and that entire roof should probably take advantage of natural light, but I'd love to try something like this out, so long as I had storage/workspace at an alternate location--and it were soundproof. No use living in a pod if it doesn't let you escape the world.

@LolaDanger one thing I can say about Irvine is that it's quiet, and really, that's all the reason I need to want to live there. I don't, because it's also expensive, but I want to.

Another benefit to not having a coffee table is that it's much easier to vacuum. That alone makes it worth it to me!

The after looks much more interesting, but all I can think when I look at it is how hard it would be to clean it.

That's really how I judge everything.

I love that you just referred to the pillows as "these bad boys." They're definitely cooler for it.

I could do without the suspension, but I love the unique space this creates.

Thank god most of my furniture is of the IKEA variety with the exception of the table my 1949 sewing machine is attached to. I will never have to regret making mistakes like this!

In lieu of earplugs (they are not recommended for overnight use--they also hurt after one night, if you're me) I can recommend SleepPhones! Small company, great product. They're flat headphones that sit over your ears by way of a soft headband. Listen to some whitenoise, ambient music, or audiobooks while you sleep. If you can't have absolute silence, you can at least have relative silence.

I hate it when shelves bow, so I made sure this time around to get narrower shelves. Yes, it's more vertical lines in your bookshelf, but I don't think this looks bad by any means. And with the cheap price of the white Billy shelves from IKEA it's not much more money to get two shelving units instead of one (to cover the same width). With shelves so narrow, there's no room to bow.

Re: making the bed--I wouldn't bother making a bed like the ones that would be difficult! Just tug off the duvet, fold it up and cram it in the drawer if you want it to look tidy, and toss it back on the bed when it's time to sleep. Or just leave it rumply. The well-enclosed and embellished alcoves look best in a heap.

I dust my grain cupboard with diatomaceous earth. It's a very fine silica powder that sticks to crawling insects/eggs and cuts up their moisture barrier so they soon suffocate or dry out. I like this because it's safe for people and pets (just avoid breathing it in, and make sure you get food grade DE).
