LOL I actually went out and bought some yarn to start crochetting (?sp) - maybe its something contagious in the air.....
I love the dainty things for food covers - and am planning to reuse all yarn from sweaters that have lost their shape, or haven't been worn for a few years.. squares for a bedspread to start (should be easy I hope)

I've seen art gum eraser in a few sites before - here is one of them (haven't tried it myself though)
Brush off as much loose mold as possible. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently brush away the mold. Although this may remove some of the loose mold, there will likely still be mold embedded into the fabric.
2
Go over the moldy areas of the suede with an art gum eraser. Gently rub the eraser over the suede, taking care not to rub too hard and damage the fabric. There may still be mold on the suede even after removing some of it with the eraser.
3
Spread a thin coating of petroleum jelly onto the molded area of the suede. Use your finger to spread it and gently rub it into the fabric until you notice the mold lifting.
4
Dampen a rag with water. Pour distilled white vinegar onto the rag.
5
Blot the molded area of the suede with the rag, removing not only excess mold, but also the petroleum jelly. Avoid rubbing or you may damage the fabric.
6
Repeat the process of applying petroleum jelly and blotting with vinegar until the mold has been completely removed from the fabric.
7
Blot the area with a dry rag to absorb any excess moisture. It is very important to dry the suede promptly so that mold does not continue to grow.
8
Restore the nap of the suede with a shoe brush. Run the brush over the affected areas of the suede using a circular motion.

I would add to cover mouth and nose while you brush the dry stuff off. I've used vinegar on a bag that got mouldy - worked well, no change in colour. I dont know if the vinegar is to kill off mould or prevent staining?

what a good way to get different ideas on natural cleaning! Since I'm npacking items which have been stored for over 10 years, I tried you method on silverware and found it worked well.

If you want to leave the tarnish to highlight the pattern, its just a matter of timing.
I shared your post, and thought you might like to see the comments:

Lindy Learmont Hain Yes, I tried the same method last time and it worked so well and no nasty fumes!
