I was sure this was a creative hack using a futon frame. It is isn't but I think I just might use an old bed frame. Great post!

@lynnebee. I totally agree about the towel but can't get my husband to agree. One thibg i do is hand wash our good knives and put them directly back into the wall-mounted knife holder where they finish drying. The kitchen is congested and I'm taking all these ideas in. Maybe a small in-sink dry rack and the kitchen towel on the side.

I love the gardening-cooking connection. More please! Totally inspirational. Especially with unusual varieties.

Along these lines, I'm enjoying a lovely book by William Woys Weaver called:
100 Vegetables and Where They Came From

It's history, culture, general culinary combinations (no recipes), and firsthand experiences of growing them in the garden. Lark's tongue kale, gbognome eggplant collards, Cardin de tours cardoon, dinawa black-eyed cowpea, and so on.

Informative and provocative article.

I wonder about the connection of our seemingly insatiable desire for comfort and rates of obesity. Consumerism as the new decadence? Comforting ourselves in our big bed-like couches into a TV coma and early grave?

There's comfort (pleasure) and nourishment, and there's comfort and gluttony.

AT and Janel are so smart! I'm prepping for the party tomorrow and I am noticing a whole new layer of stuff I somehow missed. Looking through the eyes of my guests, I see even more details and if they aren't too onerous, I'm dealing with them now. Sure, my friends probably won't notice these details or won't care if they do, but its a great exercise for me.

Big surprise of the Cure: after I sat in my living for 10 min and simply imagined how I want to feel in the space, the next day I found a chesterfield sofa for $30 at goodwill -- the sofa of my dreaming!!

Thanks, AT!!

Day 23: Weekend Chores - Pat Yourself on the Back, Relax & Celebrate! Apartment Therapy January Cure
2/1/13 12:04 PM

Postponed the "drop&swap" until the summer and instead i'm doing a home spa thing (facials, steams, masks, painting toenails etc.) with 3 girlfriends and their daughters. I was inspired by a book i found during the Cure bookshelf clean-out, something i used in the late '70s: Jeanne Roses's Herbal Body Book.

Favorite recipe: The Honey Pat. After washing your face and letting it dry, dip your fingers in honey and apply to face in upward revolving motion. Now pat face as if typing a letter until it feels so tacky you can barely pull your fingers away. Stop typing. Rinse with tepid water or mineral water. honey is a natural rejuvenator and humectant and helps restore humidity in the skin. the Honey Pat also eliminates blemishes and blackheads, because the honey is acidic. And it smells good.

For food, I'm going to try the Kitchen's gruyere-kale tart with cornmeal-millet crust.

Ditto @GirlGriot -- who is this woman I've turned into? I like her! But boy, does it ever take time to keep the house clean. I'm hoping that since everything will have a place, it will be easier to keep it clean. I think I'll review some of the posts about how to clean the house in 20 minutes (which usually means an hour for me, but with this new lean house, who knows?).

Biggest accomplishment: cleaning out the hallway bookshelves and consolidating what I have, artfully arranging the remaining single bookshelf, and hanging my newly framed artwork in the empty hallway. Wow. Now I can spend the next few months checking out what color I'm going to paint the hallway wall so that art sings even more. Donald Kaufman Color here I come!!

Brava, Janel! I love this Cure and have recommended the process to all my friends.

Small Space Solution:
Wall Mounted Landing Strips

@katiejean -- I grew up with a German shrunk! All the Americans we knew then got them to take home and they were giant! Dark wood, sterotypical Bavarian style. I heard that they were popular because the Germans are taxed by room, and a closet is considered a room. I don't know whether that is true or not, but these big storage units were very popular.

My mom went contrary to the style, since she wanted Danish modern but was overruled when they got the shrunk. So the rest of the house was much more modern and clean, and the shrunk was left to be what it was. I could see the opposite approach working well too. In either case, an interestingly shaped pendant toward the side-front of the unit could nice. Or even three of them grouped together. If your shrunk has openings for displays, some under-cabinet lights in there would also help. Good luck!
