as someone who has 5 children and has to clean up and tidy their space, I think the thought and effort that went into tidying up this space deserves some recognition! Well done! I think Ikea has great "real" furniture, you just have to pay a little more than for the crap stuff. It's also great for families who have to constantly rearrange, or for the childrearing years where things are prone to breakage. I personally prefer a mix of things old and new, classy and simple. vintage and modern. I think if you always buy what you like you will never feel a need to get rid of it based on aesthetic, but rather you no longer have a need for it. Ikea has some nice benches you could maybe fit in that spot so he would be elevated...then I would just put one good strong hook in the ceiling(if allowed) and hang some sort of circular canopy either bought or made, so it gave the illusion of a separate space.
