My dad, my twin brother and I all hate cilantro and think it tastes like soap. My mother and her whole side of the family love it and say we're crazy because it tastes nothing like soap, and we just need to learn to like it. Now I have science on my side. Take that, mom!

French press, although I make it the night before in my leakproof thermos and throw it into my bicycling bag for the next morning. Still hot when I get to work. I do whatever I can to save time in the morning so I can sleep in as much as possible.

Is there a good substitute for cilantro in recipes? Cilantro tastes like soap to me and even a small amount will ruin a dish for me. I've just been leaving it out of recipes that call for it, but is there another herb that makes a decent substitute?

People interested in brewing all-grain beers in small spaces should look into the brew-in-a-bag (BIAB) style of brewing. It allows larger batch sized than the 1gallon Brooklyn batches with almost no extra equipment than is needed for extract brewing. 2 to 2.5 gallon stovetop batches are very doable in even the smallest of apartments, and up to 5gallons are feasible with only the addition of a ~8gallon boil kettle.

here's a good example of BIAB done right- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6WVul6IEKk

@ KRDavis- If you can't have a stove (I'm guessing dorm room?) you're probably still able to have a hot pot/electric kettle, which can make perfect hardboiled eggs. Just add the egg(s) with enough water to cover, let it come to a boil, turn off the heat, and leave for 12 minutes before running under cold water.

Even a cheapo $15 hot pot from target works well, it won't be built to last forever. They're also really useful for tea or coffee, plus other food like ramen noodles.

I really don't use any sort of sweetener, real or artificial. I drink my coffee black, and my tea unsweetened' in rare cases I may add a dash of honey. I don't drink sodas, real or diet. I generally go for salty snacks over sweet ones, so it's not a huge deal for me. I don't bake a whole lot, but I use white sugar for the few times that I do. I really love tart/sour flavors, so I never add sugar to things like grapefruits when I have them.

That said, if I did need to use a sweetener for something I would never use anything artificial. I just don't trust the chemical stuff. I'd rather know exactly what I'm eating than use artificial substitutes that we might discover is harmful years later, just to save a few calories.

Is that recipe correct? 2 Cups sugar per 1 cup of Vinegar sounds like it'd be awfully sweet.

I've heard the genetics thing before, and it explains my dislike of cilantro. My father, brother, and I all hate cilantro and to us it tastes like soap, but my mother loves it, and says it tastes completely different.

I'm a super un-picky eater, basically the only things I don't like are because of their texture, although it's not slimy foods but rather mealy, gritty things like apples or water chestnuts. I'll still eat them, I just don't like them much.

I've been using bar shampoo for about a year now and am quite satisfied. As a guy I was never too picky about my shampoo in the first place, so switching wasn't a big adjustment or anything. The lack of environmental benefits were enough to make me want to switch.

I've been using J.R. Liggett's and really like it. The small paper wrapper (the only packaging it needs) is 100% biodegradable. It's cheap- about $4 a bar, and available at the grocery store near my house (and it's not even a co-op or whole foods-esque place). It tends to kinda disintegrate if it stays wet, so you need to be sure it dries quickly once you're done showering. As long as they stay dry they can last months.

I really like marniejoyce's idea of a water/spice pot on the radiator, but mine are curved on top and I'd be too worried about spilling it. Anyone have a creative solution to keep a pan secured to the top of a non-flat radiator?
