Plastic coated hooks from Lowe's: A couple of bucks.

All seven bikes are hanging from the floor joists in the basement.

I use the "sacrificial onion" technique. Quite often, It's usually onions I'm sauteeing, but any item will do -, I hrow one piece in while the pan is heating. This provides an audio cue, so I can turn my attention to other things whilst the pan is heating. (This idea came about during the many years I was saddled with a &^%$&$# electric stove - it took so damned long to heat a pan, I often did something else in the meantime....and far too often ended up with the pan TOO hot...)

As for heating an empty pan, I've heard that doing that with a non-stick pan is not good for the coating.

Since I abhor the idea of wasting food, I stay on top of what's in there, by taking inventory, and correcting the whiteboard on the door frequently. (The other person in the household who's not as good about updating the whiteboard might even say I'm a Nazi about it.....:-) )

I also continually downsize the container, as the amount in it decreases. It's much easier to see what's in the fridge when you don't have six ginormous containers with two tablespoons of stuff in each of them... Using the clear glass Pyrex bowls helps make it easier to see what's in them, at a glance, and they can go right from the fridge to the microwave.

Brought to you by the same folks who told us saccharine was good for us, no doubt.

Say what? I pay $2 - $2.50 a dozen from any one of half a dozen places around here.

(In season. Out of season I have to suck it up and buy grocery store eggs).

Lest we forget, hops are a relative newcomer to the beer scene. For ~the first 2500 years, beers were flavored with other things - wormwood, heather, spruce and so on.

For a taste of that, see if'n you can find some of the beers from Williams Brothers brewing. They do a really good heather ale: http://www.williamsbrosbrew.com/beerboard/bottles/fraoch-heather-ale

I had their Alba - which uses spruce and pine (no, it doesn't taste like Pine-Sol, promise!) whilst sitting on the porch at my camp, surrounded by pine trees...and it was almost a religious experience.... :http://www.williamsbrosbrew.com/beerboard/bottles/alba

I cut it into wedges, then run the knife between the rind and melon. Then I cut downward toward the rind and drop the chunks into a bowl.

You can dismantle a watermelon VERY quickly this way.

Two words: "gas grill". While I agree that wood is superior, flavor-wise, a gas grill can make a pretty passable oven for weather like this. If you have one with a side burner, you can do a large portion of your cooking outdoors. (That my grandmother's house had a summer kitchen makes more and more sense these days....)

...and while I agree with Bittman's likening cooking to music, how does one learn to play? By playing other people's compositions

I mix up a batch of yogurt (I vary the flavor) and "moose-lips" on Sunday and divide it up into one cup containers for a week's worth of mid- morning snacks. The yogurt softens the grains quite nicely.

It's not quite the answer to the question you asked, but one of the best uses I've found for my deep fryer is arancine:

http://italianfood.about.com/od/fritterssnacks/a/blr0030.htm

You don't fry them before you freeze them, but they freeze really well. They go from the freezer, to the deep fryer and into your belleh with ease - great for a weeknight meal and you can only take out what you need.

They're a bit of a PITA to make, but well worth it, because they freeze so well and cook up so easily.

Every time we have a party, someone asks for them!
