When I was touring apartments for the first time, I saw one apartment that had used q-tips all over the floors, and a dirty pile of clothes in the attic. Needless to say, I didn't rent it. Another one had a meat dish sitting on the coffee table for what had looked like days. That one didn't make the cut, either.

The one I did take had a sink that would spit up bubbles from the drain from the apartments above. They smelled like sulfur. We named the sink "Ted", since he was a vocal member of our apartment. I had to threaten to call the health department before the landlords fixed it for good.

I used to work at an organic farm in marketing, but I learned that they used chrysanthemum oil as a repellent for their greens. I have no idea where they got it, but it might help.

Try looking for more colorful, well designed pots and pans if you want to hang them. That could add the punch you're looking for, like a Le Creuset dutch oven.

And as everyone and their mother has said before, get rid of the terra cotta above the cabinets; even white would be better.

I make my own berry sauce; modified from Ina Garten's recipe:

2 TB blackberry or raspberry preserves or jam

3/4 lb strawberries, sliced

2 TB sugar or honey

Cook over medium heat until the berries are soft, and then blend with a immersion blender (or you could mash them; whatevs.) The jam helps thicken the sauce, and I put it on everything from cereal to toast to mango sorbet.
