Something to keep in mind Julia and Diridi is that the handmade artisan signs up to be on Heartsy. It isn't some big company hawking their goods for less, it's them trying to reach out to new customers in a 21st century way.

Since the majority of the US population is familiar with Groupon and the like, the handmade artists I have spoken with love the exposure from Heartsy. As Stacey stated, it's a great way to advertise your shop effectively and in a way that many people are familiar with.

I understand the point about over-consumption, but if the artisan wants to offer discounts (and they get to set their own terms on Heartsy), then more power to them. Most shops offer sales and the like, but with the million shops on Etsy, they can be hard to find.

Personally, I use Heartsy to find new shops, not necessarily buy the deals. It's a great way for me to locate unusual items and artisans. To each their own :)

Great question Meghan! One recommendation is to offer bulk purchasing for the apartment. It saves on a few things including packaging and cost. It can also help unintentionally "green" your building by offering eco-choices that are priced competitively with their mainstream counterparts.

I have seen success with bulk CFL purchasing, cleaning products, and compostable bags.
(also, you could get scrap materials and have a "sew your own" station for the bags if you have the time and resources to set this up).

Best of luck with you event! Sounds like you have some great ideas in the works.

Embryoconcepts, that is an option too. This method is designed to create the most smooth walls possible so you could even wallpaper over them. I haven't tried skim coating so let us know how it goes!

thefeltmouse, thank you for pointing that out. Asbestos in popcorn ceilings and plaster is very rare but it is a good idea to get you walls tested dependent on the age of your home. Here is a link to the EPA's asbestos site for more information: http://www.epa.gov/asbestos/

I am so glad you two liked it! And I will be dabbling in further dyeing expeditions, so I will keep you posted.

Herong, I am not sure about the undyed wool. My guess is no because mordant is used to set color, so I would still go through the mordant process. If there already is some color, I would scale back the amount of plant used by 1/4 to 1/2, or you can just soak it for a shorter period of time.

I am by no means an expert, but this is a fun experiment. Please share how both of your projects turn out!

Unfortunately the Green Pockets or Bathroom Bubble Planters have not gone into production yet. They were showcased back in 2009 in Milan by Maruja Fuentes. Just this past year she lost the battle to cancer at age 32. It is unknown whether the Green Pocket concept will go into production following this tragedy.

On a positive note, she supplied us with this and several other inventive ideas that will help spur and inspire more innovation in this area. What I didn't mention is that the planters themselves were to be made of recyclable materials.

Let's see if this idea crops up in the future.

Yes, they truly are! I have the "Tuckered Out" for mine, and she prefers that to the couch any day. Cozy, easy to clean, and apparently quite comfortable.

Hmm great question jjames582! It is hard to know without seeing the bottle though. Have you tried adding anything that will either help loosen it like Vaseline or eco-alternatives or anything to help pry it open without breaking it, like needle-nosed pliers?

Lizzykewl, yes I think that their website has changed since this picture was originally put up. I think now it is part of their design company, so it may not be available for purchase.

Graeme from springcleanti I believe it has been sealed. Glad you all liked it! Concrete isn't for everyone, but when it works for your space (or there aren't other options) this is a fun twist. The wall stickers are fun too.

ButterfluyBleus, the top picture is actually the final product minus an actual picture inside. I would be happy to add a few more for ones I am building right now. Check back later!

:) Actually they live on a farm. The wood used was going to be burned, not used. And trust me, I had the same reaction and then I felt the table (even smelled it), and you would never know. It is also sealed for those a bit leary of the idea. But for anyone who has seen the wide array of dilapidated farm buildings and structures from wood, these creative ways to reuse materials are a great idea.

Although this house is newly built, Canadiancook, it is located in farmland that was divided and sold for development. Their intention was to create a house that could serve as an example in place of cookie cutter homes. I was quite impressed with their ingenuity of design. As a Design and Build guy, it's great for Peter to invite clients to his house so they can truly envision what is possible with green design. So their house serves multiple functions outside of just living quarters.

Yes, clchilds, the "Great Room" is incredible. Grand, yet comfortable. Glad you enjoyed it!
