I have a dwarf Meyer lemon, and it's loaded with fruit right now. I live in northern WI. I keep all my plants (2 citrus, several orchids, herbs, and flowers) under lights in the winter and outside in the summer. I am careful about overwatering the citrus, and to use a heavy N fertilizer and you have to be careful of pests like scales. They like acid soils. I agree that this is not a good choice for a dorm.

I wish there was some more editing done on these some of these posts; the blurb of information could have been written more concisely. Acres upon acres of pasture? Romantic much? And why mention rBST and rBGH separately? They are the same molecule.

1. Corn is a tropical grass.
2. ALL ruminant milk contains both biologically active isomers of CLA: it is biohydrogentated in the rumen.
3. Group housing calves can cause increased incidence of scours and respiratory disease, and most definitely does not work on most dairies.
4. What exactly is a "corporate cow"? 98% of dairy farms in the US are family owned: if a family forms a corporation or an LLC for a business structure, that's bad? I can tell you from years of experience that cows from large dairies produce equally healthy milk as those from small dairies. What makes you think otherwise?

I am a ruminant nutritionist. It's great to see a dairy farm on apt therapy. But please be aware that feeding cows silage and keeping records is what 99.9% of all dairy farms in the US do, you would be out of business quite swiftly if you didn't. Corn silage contains grain, FYI - it's the entire plant chopped to 3/4" and fermented. There is also nothing wrong with feeding cattle grain.

I hope more people will tour commercial dairy farms to understand the industry and get correct information directly from the source: US dairy producers.

I am from New England, and never saw a green bean casserole until I moved to the Midwest. We also never ate sweet potatoes with marshmallows, either. This wasn't mentioned, but we didn't drown everything in Ranch dressing, another oddity I notice here (Midwest).

If you happen to work in a university lab, you can find tons of real labware for free, since a lot of it is no longer used. I can't believe people will $26 for a wire test tube rack that was $1 from Fisher.

All the advice is good. Some things I've done:
1. nothing
2. switch shower head and save the old one
3. painted a bedroom - the ONLY reason was because the previous tenant smoked and it was GROSS, otherwise, I wouldn't have bothered
4. Tore out WTW carpet with the landlord's help, hardwood underneath :)

I would rather save money to buy a house. My rule is any money I spend, I need to be able to take it with me (quality furniture, kitchen supplies, etc.).

Faux aging is not my thing. I prefer the before frame, and neither fabric.

I still keep my atlas handy.

@Laura E, I was thinking the SAME thing about Hampshire. And half of UMass is bunker and half is colonial. Also, I am not sure a college's architecture is as important as faculty/teaching/research.

I grew up in a revival saltbox that my father built and at least 50% of my friends grew up in large Colonials as well. When I moved to central IL, I had to get used to smaller ranches. I like both.

Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles and growing up on a farm. Grad school helped, needing to do things on the cheap. Now, some blogs (not all, by any stretch) and books.

VT should be here. Thanks John H for suggestions!
