A diaper caddy filled with goodies - I've been using our "Sara Bear" Diaper caddy every day since our son was born almost two years ago. Love it!

Fill it with California Baby or another brand of all-natural or organic body washes, shampoos and lotions. Diaper ointment (my fav is Desitin Original with the purple label) wash cloths, bath toys...

Even though the new baby will come when he is 14 months, I would want him fullytransitioned to the new bed two months prior to the new baby's arrival so he doesn't associate the new baby with him losing his crib. Transitioning to a bed and adjusting to a new sibling would be too much at one time. So, considering that, I would buy an additional crib, but I would be sure to get a convertible crib that you can turn into a toddler bed and later into a full size headboard/footboard.

For what it's worth to other people who are in the same situation but have a slightly older first child...we transitioned our 18 month old from his crib to a twin mattress on the floor with no problems at all. We had the mattress on the floor in his room for several months before we ever asked him to sleep in it. We played on it and read books in it. When he did start sleeping on the mattress, we kept the crib in his room so he could start the night on the mattress and if he woke up at night, we'd put him in the crib. Eventually, he stopped waking up during the night and we didn't need the crib anymore. The transition worked perfectly. Oh and we used a baby gate at his door so he couldn't leave the room and he would call out to us. He now knows to stay in his room and call for us when he needs us. We will eventually transition him again, slowly, from a floor mattress to a platform bed.

@alysaaria - if you read the article, he mentions plans for the future:

Our goal is to have the three boys use this as their bedroom for a few years until we can expand our house or connect to the guesthouse in back.

I like some of these as additional decorations for Christmas, but as an alternative for the Christmas tree? That would me make me sad - especially for a child. The ladder is especially awful and weird to me.

Pillows and loose fitting bedding for a crib/bassinet? Definitely SIDS risk. This is a totally irresponsible post promoting this line of bedding.

AmberM: I think bedding manufacturers make this stuff because 'we' all buy those nice expensive crib sets! I learned after having my first - I won't be doing it again with my second:-)

Cute idea, but why is the Have a Good Morning part so faint? Why not make the see-in-the-daytime part of the print a little more exciting to look at?

Oh no, I think the donations thing is a great idea! It is a great lesson for the little ones. You just have to make it accessible and hands-on for the kids.

Have a rescue group at the party - on the invitation you would mention that the group will be there and you will have a donation jar for them at the party and anything collected will be given to the group at the end of the party!

If I received that invitation, I would bring some cash for the donation jar AND a small present for the birthday boy!

I also like the idea of having actual rescued animals come to the party. The kids would love to interact with real animals and could learn about the responsibility of taking care of animals, in a fun way of course!

I volunteer with my local greyhound adoption group and we have volunteers who would bring retired racing greyhounds to different events including library story times for little ones. The kids love the dogs and greyhounds are so gentle with the kids. The volunteers do it for free and appreciate the opportunity to introduce greyhounds to people and hope to plant seeds for future adoptions.

Donations would go to the rescue group who came to your party. Good luck and have fun!
