We used "Wire Guard" cord covers so there would be no long cords to tug at. Sort of looks like molding and attaches to the wall if you want it too.

We also have a very heavy brass floor lamp. We screwed two tiny eye hooks into the wall and then used a piece of fishing line, wrapped it just under the bulb socket and attached to the hooks. This just makes sure it won't tip over. With the fishing line and placement you cannot even see it.

We aren't big into baby proofing either - but the lamp is so top heavy and I just wanted to be able to go to the bathroom :)

I echo the white idea. To help with the "design" process you might want to find some room images online, print and then let her pick out one she likes the best to use as inspiration. That way you can make selections that you are comfortable with while stilling giving her the control on the final direction.

Where did you find the changing pad on top (not the actual pad but the "holder" for lack of a better term)

Ok - I'll have to think about Corelle shattering. We have a flagstone patio (with cracks of grass in between) so shattering into a hundred pieces would be a problem - especially if it happened near/in the pool. Will look into camping dishes as well.

You could pick up some alphabet or number cards that are printed on heavy card stock and put them up with double sided non marking tape. We have these above our changing table and if they fall off no big deal. http://www.eeboo.com/product.php?cat=30&prod=34 I'm sure you could find something similar in a more "big boy" appropriate theme.

Otherwise I echo the other ideas of a wall mural.

I second the idea for the next morning. Fresh bagels, coffee cake etc. Something nice they can wake up to after all the hard working cooking & cleaning the night before.

Otherwise just go for a soap or lotion or candle.

You can take flowers - just make sure you put them in a vase before you go - something as simple as a mason jar is fine.

We used a cradle next to our bed. When the baby turned 5 months we transitioned to a crib. It is really nice to have them close by in the early months and they seem snugger somehow in a smaller bed. You can totally wait but you might want to get it sooner rather than later so its ready when you are - I mean you'll need to at some point right?
