@KaraD Thanks! I figured what's done is done — no sense in shaming her after the fact. I hope she checks in and updates us with what she's decided to do (not that anyone else's opinions matter besides hers, though)! :)

@jdoey — Thanks for mentioning. It's what I figured, too, but there were several posts (here and elsewhere) that mentioned the orientation of the router itself as making a difference, but I've only ever heard of limiting obstructions and providing adequate heat dissipation as a means of optimizing the performance!

The other thing that would keep us from doing this, too, is that I would want to have the option to plug in a hard drive and printer to the AirPort. Otherwise, very nice, and out-of-the-way!

An $8 Set of IKEA Hangers Improves Wireless Router Reception

Wish I had seen this sooner; my husband and I literally just tackled this same project earlier today. However, with no IKEA anywhere nearby, we'd have to wait to get these if we could order them anyway.

I, too, have questions about the cords; maybe it's the angle, but the ethernet cable would almost undoubtedly stick out a bit higher so that you could see it, but I love how clean it looks to hide the bulk of the cords within the wall. We aren't that lucky in that we're renting, and due to the orientation of the DSL jack (yep, that's another cable David likely didn't have to deal with if he just has cable), we can't drill in the wall AND we have to keep it close to our ISP's router.

Full disclosure: I work for an Apple Specialist, and have to point out that it's "AirPort," not "Airport." (Sorry — I know that's annoying!) :) I also am intrigued about whether it's true that the original orientation of the Wi-Fi router makes a difference in the signal strength at all...I'll be looking into that one.

I totally understand those who are touting the worth of a solid vintage piece and keeping it intact, but it seems that some are just mean-spirited. It's Erin's piece, and she's hoping to make it fit her taste.

That said, I'm with most of you in that a nice Danish oil treatment would salvage most the original aesthetic of the piece and it's worth catering the rest of the furnishings in the room around!

downtown frederick, MD (my hometown) with two good friends; total rent was $400, split three ways...crazy. though not a huge city, there was lots to do and downtown was hoppin' for three ladies in their early 20s. the apartment was big, too—however, it was slightly run-down due to the elderly owners who hadn't updated anything in years (not to mention no idea what they could charge for prime space). there were lots of memories made that year, and i'll always remember it fondly as the last hurrah before i picked up to move out-of-state with my now-husband!

Wow... a lot of haters out there. But I like it; it feels 'fun' to me. Plus, nobody ever agrees on art, and that's the way it should stay!

re: highchair safety,

While I see your points made above, my guess is that the highchair photo they're using is a stock image, not the one Kayla's actually trying to paint...

BTW, thanks for the tips! I'm expecting my first in February, and have been enjoying many a DIY baby project. We're also actively trying to keep our 'gear' as minimal as possible, with natural materials and sustainability in mind. Here's hoping!
