Jonathan Adler! WOW! I'd walk across broken glass to get to some of his designs. So I will be shopping in JCP again and soon. And BTW, I heard on NPR (just this morning) that JCP sales decreased 30% in the past year. That is HUGE. I really think they are going in the right direction in many ways. I sure hope that the JCP near me holds on... at least until I get to buy some Jonathan Adler items :)

I'd do it, but as inexpensively as possible! The chair is cute and you'd keep it for years, if not a lifetime. I'd recommend that you do part of this project yourself. First, remove all the fabric, keeping each piece intact, so your upholsterer can use it as a pattern. That will save them time, which should save you some money. And once you have removed the fabric, either stain or paint the wood yourself, which will also save you money. Then take it to the upholsterer. I would not recommend corduroy, partly because I dislike it (soooo much), but mostly because I don't think it would work with the style of the chair. Because the style of the chair is rather old/stodgy, I'd go with a vibrant fabric color or a vibrant paint (on the wood). If I were going to do it myself, I'd get three different fabrics that coordinate (you can use some from the 'odds and ends bin' at the fabric store this way, and save more money) and use one fabric on the very back, one on the sides and the third on the arms and seat. I'd paint the wood bright white or neon yellow or grass green.

Or maybe I would sand down the wood and kind of white wash it, and then get a cheap 'burlap look-alike' or find an old grain sack, and do it in a neutral kind of way.

Either way, I'd recommend that you go for it.

This has to be my very favorite "white walled" room of all time. It makes me want to go home and change my entire bedroom so it looks just like this! This has to have been done by a professioanl decorator! It is just 'ever so loverly'. It sort of lookes liek a Sarah Richardson kid of design (whose work I admire sooo much) I just LOVE it! I seriously think I will paint my bedroom white and get those fabulous curtains.

I have a map that is VERY simliar to yours, the only diffence is that mine has two maps on it, one being Europe during the crusades and one being a more detailed look at England at the same period. I had not noticed it before, but mine is also starting to curl up. Now when I look at it, I focus on the curling (gee, thanks :)). Anyway, the Ballard Designs catalog has some lovely (very simliar) maps that are mounted on boards or stretched...not sure which. And I think that they look really lovely. I am now considering mounting mine to a board. Maybe modge-podging it or something. Possibly even having that done professionally. Depends on the expense. I love the maps and I am not that into making sure they 'stay on the roller', not at the expense of losing them to the degradation of time anyway. I would love them either way. So my suggestion is that you go to the Ballard Designs website and look at their maps. And if you don't detest them :) then perhaps consider having them mounted.

I am so in love with this whole place, that I can barely stand it. A particular favorite is that blue dresser and the way the color works in the room. I just love it. Jill has a talent that shines through here, this place makes me swoon. Seriously. I am swooning! :)

Was this in Texas? I am asking because I swear I saw the exact same desk at a thrift store here... and had similar visions for it. But my daughter talked me out of it. (And I listened to her- darn it!) This desk looks fabUlous! I have to say though, that the styling makes it look even better. The whole vingette is so beautifully styled! I am feeling some serious envy! And I am not going to let my daughter talk me out of buying another gem like this!

I am SHOCKED about the 'creepy' comments. How is this even remotely creepy? I think this is creative and really cool 'outside the box' thinking, and the chair is now a genuine treasure. I have seen designers put photo's of ancestors/family on throw pillows and I LOVE that too. As a matter of fact, I am thinking of doing that, I have some photo's from the mid 1800's of my great, great Grandparents and I would love to see them on pillows or a chair.

This is genius! I have been looking all over for a new (and inexepensive) coffee table that is simple. Now I am going to get the IKEA LACK coffee table and do the same thing to it! It will be perfect! I am so excited! I'll do it this weekend!

I love love love apartmenttherapy! I love knowing that other people think of these things too! And I love that living room. I just purchased a photo called ballons over paris (@ 20% off) it is 30x37 and am painting a thrift store frame (7 dollars) and that will go over my fireplace mantel. And I can hardly wait to get it to the frame store so I can get it up on thecwall! And it will be a bargain.

PAINT! PAINT! PAINT! Everything. I think that particular color of pine is hideous. Always has been and always will be. And yep, get that carpet ripped out too. And if the floors are wood, stain them a nice walnut. Anything but that fugly fugly pine.

Dear SunnygirlSF,
I think (and hope) that "Keep Calm and Carry On" will never go 'out of style'. I have a red poster in my office, a blue one in my bedroom, and a black and white in my living room. I give copies as gifts. It may sound like I have excessive number of these posters (and as I type this, it kind of does:)) but when I see that poster, I think of the 33,000 people who died in the Blitz, the Londoners who fought, prayed, and barely lived through that horrible horrible war, with a grace and bravery that has never been been seen in the general public. They went to dances while hearing bombs drop, stood on rooftops, and put incenduary bombs out with buckets of sand, sent their children off to live with strangers, slept on makeshift beds under the streets and came up to find their family members, homes, and friends gone forever. I think of my Granny sitting under her stairs waiting for the buzz bombs to pass over head and spare her street, and her neighbors. And when I am having a tough day, or week, or moment, I think of them and what they went through, and I realize that if they could do what they did, I can get through anything. And I hope that I have one tenth of their bravery and grit.

And on another note, I love Homegoods :)

I am stunned by the talent of this designer! This is anything BUT a 'meh'. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it! I love the way the furniture is placed, the way the light flows through the place. The way the positive and negative spaces play off each other. And I especially like the roof deck, how you walk through the 'corridors' and come out to a view of the river. I mean, can it GET better than this in a city? I'd say no.

With a chair that beautiful, who cares who made it? And perfect choice on the fabric, you DO have a great eye. Makes me wonder about the rest of your place, is it as lovely as I think it is?

I agree with Miami's Elaine, the bathroom would be better on the other side of the bedroom. However, I LOVE IKEA's designs (not to mention their prices) and would LOVE to live in this house. I wish it was available in Dallas, I would very seriously consider selling my condo and buying it, if it had 2 bedrooms.

Dear lepidoptery- The curtain in the kitchen looks like a table cloth from Target. I bought 2 of them when I bought my Dwell bedding from Target and I hung them as curtains in my bedroom. They matched the bedding, Target did not have draperies that matched, so I improvised. I am not sure that they still sell them. But you can check.

And I also love what people are calling clutter, because that also reads as beauty to me. This place could not be lovlier! (Hmmm...is that how you spell lovlier?)
