What a great idea. I wish I had the room to tuck my son's play kitchen in a little nook like that....
@joannaelizabeth, I can see where you're coming from, but it looks like the play kitchen is actually on the other side of the main food prep area....and if her kids are anything like mine, something to keep them occupied is essential. My son either sits between my legs, or hugs my leg with both arms while I'm cooking, unless I have something in the kitchen for him to do....

laughing at the iced latte...kids are awesome...

I'm actually a single mom, and I'll be honest, until I figured it out, I missed a shower here and there. I started out leaving him in a bouncy seat when he was teeny tiny, but as he got older, he stopped falling asleep in it, and started screaming to be let out instead, so I started taking baths instead, while he was sleeping at night. I had about an hour window between when he fell asleep and when he'd wake up to nurse. I'd fill the tub and then hop in when it was full, and since we were in a little one-bedroom apartment, I figured I could hear him better if he woke up if I was in a tub versus a shower. We've been taking baths together since he was about 1 and now that he's 2 we take showers together. Much easier, and I feel like I'm saving water, bonus....

I think quiet spots are important. Not all kids are the same, and most often they need a break from the chaos and loud play to calm down and relax a little. As a kindergarten teacher, I'm always on the lookout for ideas for making nice quiet reading nooks. I'm not too happy with my set-up right now, I think you've prompted me to try and find some inspiration to give it a little makeover.

can you bolt pet gates into the wall? cause if not, they're not safe for the top of the stairs...my kid likes to step up on his gate and shake the bars while I'm not looking...I already have nightmares about him shaking the whole thing (and himself) right down the stairs, and it's bolted into studs with 4 inch screws....can't imagine if it wasn't secured...

I second Caralyn's comment, my kid's not a climber, but he does love "repurposing" everything as a stacking toy...and a missile sometimes too! It looks cute though, and if it works for her kids, it might be worth a try for certain families...

Hey there, Emilie here...

These ideas are great, thank you all for taking the time. You've given me lots to think about, but I think you're all right, and I need to admit defeat and make them two separate rooms! :)
I do think I'll make the switch, and make the bigger room my sitting room...I'll have to play around with all your suggestions, and see what works best for us... I'm really excited about this re-do now that I've got so many ideas to try out!

I like my diaper genie, but I live in Ottawa, Canada, and it's winter right now, so it saves me from having to go outside to put my diapers in the trash can every couple of hours. If you put your trash out every day, you may not have a problem, and newborn poo doesn't smell that bad...you may change your mind once the baby switches to solid food, but until then you can probably do without.

I allow plastic, but only for toys I get second hand. I figured I'm doing my part by re-using the toys, instead of letting them go to the landfill. I also have that doorway, and it's not as obnoxious as some of the other things I've seen. I mostly pared my son's toys down to things that don't make a noise on their own (he's noisy enough on his own)....
