5 Impressive IKEA Hacks

What I envisioned was if I was staying near the beach, like in a cabana or cottage. Something airy, natural, decor that plays well with a lot of light.

I can't recall where I got it, but it is one of the down-alternative comforters that is isn't very thick. It's for warmer weather/rooms so it's pretty flat.

Thanks, everyone! You can check out more photos here, which will indicate more of what I used to create this natural space:

I didn't want the room to feel too coordinated with Asian or beach styles, so the effect is subtle. Decorating subtly also complements the slightly minimalistic ambiance of the room.

I appreciate all your votes!

I vote for the contact paper over the cabinet & drawer faces. It's what I did in my rental kitchen (see link below) and added new hardware. The contact paper isn't all that sticky so it should peel off pretty easily once I'm ready to move.

I also think the blue is a nice contrast with the curtains, but the coolness of the furniture is what stands out to me as not matching. I would revise the curtains, which would be much easier than repainting the wall.

What mood do you want for the room? What is the room's purpose?

But I can see too where repainting the wall would help; for instance, if you want the space feel lighter and airier, I'd select a light gray or light gray-blue. Just make sure the tones of gray complement each other.

It's a great change. I just wish the "after" photos would be more comparable to the "before" shots. The before shot for this kitchen is realistic; it gives a lived-in feel. But the after shot has no kitchen accessories whatsoever, nothing on the counter tops. Those may be small things but they also play a big part in the overall feel of the new room.

I like the look of lucite/plastic chairs too, but have always wondered if anyone else sees it as impractical. After sitting on one for a while, wouldn't it make your butt pretty hot? And you surely wouldn't want to sit on them with shorts on.

I have Marshmallow earbuds from Walmart. They were $20, which I was hesitant to spend at first. They come in different colors and 2 different size foam sleeves. I had trouble with others not fitting well or hurting. These are so comfy and work well as earplugs also.

When considering color, think about what kind of mood you want to create: cool, serene, warm, energizing, funky, modern, traditional, etc.

Me, I'd inject some color in that room with a nice bright hue. Another thought is to use the existing rug you have and paint a pattern onto it with a vivid color. Use stencils or make one... there's plenty of info out there on how to do it.

Or you could add a pattern to it with a more matching color. I'd just make sure it's a pattern than fits nicely with the others in the room (maybe something larger)?

In my city (Toledo, OH), there was a recent death of a baby due to co-sleeping with her parents. If this is to be humorous, the point is lost when it's such a dangerous occurrence.

I would consider what other colors you have in the other rooms of your home. I love when rooms have a flowing color palette. They can have different colors, but still have some congruence to them. So if you could let us know what other colors you're working with, it would help me, at least. :)

I would leave the walls & couch neutral & bring in more color with accessories. I think blues & greens can actually work as "neutrals," so I think just about any color would match. HOWEVER, make sure the other colors you use in accessories are of the same tone to ensure more of a flowing color scheme (if that's what you want).

Also, I would move the two paintings away from each other. I think they should be hung apart so they can each stand out.

I don't think anyone else asked yet... what are the colors and decor like in your other rooms? Especially those that adjoin the kitchen? I would take those into consideration with how to decorate.

I am so like you 0tk421!!! When I sleep somewhere else, I cover up any source of electronic light, usually with a pillow or blanket if I can't just turn it off.

I'm a firm believer in the power of light and have practiced the gradual dimming of lights at night for a good while. It helps prep my body and mind for sleep. Oddly, computer light does not keep me awake as they say it does. I also have a routine of no talking on the phone and no heavy conversation via media/text in the last few hours of night. I read (but online) and it's nothing heavy. Usually just decorating sites/blogs like this great one. :)

I have a very similar kitchen that is a rental. Sure, you may be able to paint the cabinets, but it would take a lot of time and work.

I recently added white contact paper to the faces of the drawers and cabinets, as well as drawer pulls/knobs. It did wonders to brighten up the kitchen and make it feel larger!

Also, I agree with everything else about decluttering. My garbage is under the sink and my cleaning tools in a closet, because I don't like dirty things like that being out in the open. Bad energy.
