What exactly is the problem? I love the orange. But if you don't, change it to another color or go black or white.

Orange looks great with blue -- any shade, from navy to pale aquamarine -- and also looks fabulous with white or green. Your grays/blacks are perfect neutrals.

Mocktail doesn't both me any more than verbing the noun, "Google," as in, "Let's google it!" A cocktail is defined as "an alcoholic mixed drink that contains two or more ingredients—at least one of the ingredients must be a spirit." So vodka and grapefruit is a cocktail. If it doesn't have alcohol, but has two or more ingredients, then it's a mixed drink without alochol, a faux-cocktail, or mocktail. Why anyone would go out of their way to find offense and make a stand about their "mixed drink" not being "fake" is just looking to be offended and probably could use a cocktail or two, IMO.

I agree, though that "preggertini" is just, well, ick.

Oh and this should equally offend the formerly mentioned crowd: all of the "mocktails" suggested would be fabulous with a shot of vodka or two. I'm saving these for my next cocktail party and am going to mix up a pitcher and put in bold letters, "Mocktail Mix" for those who would prefer not to indulge. Oh, dear, it just occurred to me that I might offend in that drinking fresh juice is certainly considered indulgent by many. Especially those counting their carbs!! Those folks like their hard alcohol without juice or added sugar of any kind.

oh dear. such a conundrum about how not to offend. ...

That is by far the weirdest architectural detail I have ever seen.

Cover it up / rip it out / raise it / replace it with one of those wall-mounted gas fireplaces.

I now feel less spiteful about our own odd fireplace with no hearth. Yours takes the cake!

@classof65 ... depends on the size of your home. I live in Salt Lake City, which has an average cost of living for the U.S. Our house is 3800 square feet, and I can get two housekeepers for about $250 for 4 hours.

sheesh! None of those are 15 minute chores... I double-dog dare the editor to time themselves doing each one, including the prep time.

My housekeeping and errand tips-for-protecting-your-weekends
(aside from hiring a house-cleaner and personal assistant, which is by far my preferred way to handle this issue):

1. Clean the shower while you're in it.
I keep a caddy including a skinny grout brush, a wide scrub brush, and shower cleaner in the bathroom. About every two weeks, I spray down the shower, floss my teeth (to give the cleaner about two minutes to do its thing), turn on the water, scrub the shower, and then scrub myself.

2. Keep a pop-up tub of disinfectant wipes in each bathroom and the kitchen.
Wipe as needed.

3. Vacuum once a week on a weeknight.
Even the hardwood floors.

4. If you have a washer/dryer at home, do one load each weeknight evening while you're cooking dinner or watching the news or talking on the phone or surfing the internet or paying bills. By Saturday, the laundry is done! And honestly, I've timed it: it only takes 5 minutes to fold a basket of laundry (sock matching excepted). And 5 minutes to put it away. Just do it. Don't let folding and putting away pile up!

5. Do errands at lunch or after work.
For example, today I went to the bank and the UPS store at lunch. After work I'm going to stop at Costco and the shoe repair shop.

6. Splurge on a housekeeper once every 3 months to do the deep cleaning. Baseboards. Fridge. Oven. Windows. Then all you have to do is the maintenance!

Hah! sorry, but just one or two of those tips would take that long.

How about, this:
Keep a large box handy that easily fits behind a closet door.
Step one: When you need to clean quickly, place the box at the end of your desk, and push everything that isn't nailed or wired down into the box.
Step two: push box into the close and shut the door.

I actually do this at work. I have a filing cabinet next to my desk and I keep one drawer empty. If my desk is out of control and someone important is coming, I dump it all in the drawer, and take it out when they're gone.

I think the question is really strange... you bought it and thought it was cool because it is all wood and a great deal for $20, but you think it looks hideous with it's all-wood grain?

So paint it white and put some bright accessories on the top like a lime lamp or a pink bowl.

That simply can't be right. Marble is pretty soft and should be easy to work with and get a straight cut. I have granite tile countertops (not a solid piece), and all my seams look way better than that. I wouldn't pay for it until they made it look right. Or I'd take them to small claims court, which is what I actually did when I landscaper did horribly shoddy work.

my husband and i discovered a nearly white -- grey, really -- bee living at Crystal Peak in western utah. The "peak" is what remains of the wall of an acient volcano tuft. The plants and insects that live on it have actually evolved for their micro-environment. Really amazing. You can make silk darker, but like everyone said, you can't make it lighter. The science behind why bleach destroys silk is that it is a protein fiber, and bleach breaks down protein cells (which is why you can use it to kill bacteria). Sunlight lightens the dyes used in silk so bright, saturated colors will fade. Over time, silk also responds to UV light the same way as your hair (another protein fiber) -- it fades and becomes brittle.

If you really hate the color, and the problem isn't backlighting (which can be solved with a standard lining or blackout lining), all you can do is go darker or find a way to work with the color.

You wrote: "Unopened buds are good–much better than many open flowers. ..." The rule of thumb I use is, "Buy a big plant, not a big bouquet." Fewer or no flower buds, lots of new green growth, and lots of well developed branches are good. Also, if you're buying a shrub or tree pull it out of the mix and look at it's overall shape.

So Inspiring!! Makes me want to run home, rip out the crappy shelving, and order my Elfa system right away. Iooooove Elfa. Not cheap. But so much better than the cheap alternatives. You get what you pay for. Love the stencil, too. You'd think a closet is hardly worth the effort, but your results show how much power some great pattern and color can have on a tiny space. We all have to get dressed, right? Why not have a little aesthetic pickme up while we're at it?

I love nothing more than pouring myself a glass of wine with a light snack, putting on music that makes me happy, and lingering over making and eating a simple meal. Sure, a meal is often better with companionship, but sometimes it's nice to be in the moment with myself, and listen, drink, eat, smell, read what I want, at the pace I want.

@Cactina, I understand the ache... you might find that savoring some pleasure on your own is surprisingly soothing for a broken heart, though it seems counterintuitive. Give it a shot.

My latest quick one-pan dinner is fresh spinach sauted with garlic and a pinch of salt and pepper, topped with fried egg (with runny yolk!), a dollop of greek yohurt seasoned with a little cumin, salt & pepper, and some salsa over the top. Even better with a fresh corn tortillia underneath if you have some handy. Mix it up by layering in some black beans or marinated pork MMMMM!

I've found getting at least 8 hours of sleep means it's much easier to wake up. And it's always easier to get out of bed when I know I'm not going to work or doing errands.... in other words, after being rested, being "up" is a pshcological exercise. I like my job -- it's not that I dread going to work -- but my desire to stay in bed is a lot stronger when I must get up, shower, commute, etc.

@DHW, I use the pants hanger solution -- four, actually, because I have so many scarves -- and keep them hung within easy reach of my full length mirror. Honestly, I really dislike the solution because it's sloppy-- the scarves slide all over the place, and I have to knot the short ones. I've been too cheap to upgrade to a hanger with loops or holes, but the individual spot for each scarf really keeps everything tidy. I like this towel bar idea, too ... note to self for when I re-org the closet!

Spiegelau are my favorite. Reasonably priced, attractive, great quality glass, and they stand up well to my dishwasher and hard water.

A well lived life, in my opnion, means that you break a wine glass every now and then. And it shouldn't break the bank to replace them.

I inherted a set of Waterford glasses that run about $400 each to replace... guess how often I use them? And guess how angry I still am at my X for insisting that I ship the box of 12 glasses home in a Pod with the furniture, rather than carry them on the plane...and ended up with 9 glasses. gggrrrrrrrrrrrrr
