Bklynbaker - we call that "wintercourse" in our house! Though perhaps sex for warmth is something only "old marrieds" do...

msingerman, my thoughts exactly!

But then again, if it’s a big bottle, I wouldn’t open it just for me (commitment issues), so while I say “don’t judge a wine by its label,” I also vote that you wait until warmer weather and turn it into a nice white sangria (though I‘ve also had nice “winter” sangrias that have involved cranberries and citrus).

Just made this for a post-TG dinner party and it was a huge hit, very fresh tasting and not at all "ugg, here I am, munching raw kale". I dressed it at least 30-45 minutes before eating and it was just fine.

I made those spiced pumpkin biscuits last night - they were so freakin' good. I used homemade pumpkin puree, which is a little more watery than the canned puree, so I just simmered it for a bit to dry it out before adding it to the other ingredients.

Thank you for sharing posting the link!

Dorie's stuffed pumpkin is my favorite autumn meal:

I also love to make kaddu (an Indian dish of spiced pumpkin) and chapati.

I immediately went to the death row connotations as well, especially since TX announced it will no longer allow prisoners and special requests.

Something that has changed my okra-lovin' life: broiled okra. I love any vegetable broiled or roasted and okra works too, I just discovered. It gets crispy and chewey and not at all slimey (I love the slime and will take okra whichever way I can get it, but my okra-hating husband will only eat it broiled, so I just say "baby steps" and am working up to making him gumbo).

I used to feel the exact same way, then I discovered the cream of celery soup recipe in the Joy of Cooking. It takes 20 minutes and it's insanely good - even my totally "cream of anything" averse husband has requested I make it again. Now I look for reasons to have "extra" celery around.

So even without being serrated it works well on tomatoes and bread? Interesting. I could see my husband getting one of these for Christmas...

While the 30 year me is like, "whatever floats your boat but they're not for me," my 10 to 15 year old self would have been crazy for these! I've always been in to trompe l'oeil/faux stuff (used to have one of those secret safes that looks like a loaf of bread) and while I don't own any now I still get a kick out of it, and her stuff is well done. I could see my niece being into the cupcake candles for sure.

tamingthetart - I was wondering about the suffix but then work duties took over and I completely forgot to look into etymology before I posted. Very interesting link, thanks for sharing it! Though I guess it could be debated that if the "ard" suffix "usually denotes people who regularly engage in an activity" than calling someone who doesn't drink milk a "lactard" doesn't quiet jibe.

And because it's always a good idea to argue with people on the internet, I just want to say that maybe not everyone realizes that “lactard” is offensive/derogatory, and perhaps there are better ways of influencing someone’s word choice.

I adore gin with the lavender flavored Dry soda and a squeeze of lime. I wonder if I should experiment with making lavener infused gin - it can't be hard, right? Maybe with a more floral gin to being with, like Aviation?

Also, basil and gin go well together (though I don't know if tonic would add to the combination, I usually just combine it all with some simple syrup and soda water).

I like mine with a splash of water, and re. the cocktail suggestions, I'm not sure that one really needs to "work up to whiskey" with sours and the manhattan (both being sweet and the latter usually bourbon based) - if you want to try whiskey in a "cocktail" I suggest scotch & sodas (a reliable order in any bar).
