Also, the type of cornmeal makes a difference. My family used course yellow, which is firmer. Softer, creamier variations use fine ground. White maize is sometimes used, but any grain can work, as "polenta" is basically mush grain. It's a messy dish to make, but even slow cooked does not require that much attention. it's the cleaning of pots that keeps me from making it often!

Well, this is a variation on traditional serving, for a large dinner. You can buy this kind of slab from any lumber salvage yard. If it's already sanded, then treated with food-grade jojoba/beeswax, it only needs to be cleaned with white vinegar and retreated as needed. I would think it's not going into the trash! It's basically a long breadboard or cutting board.

My Northern Italian grandmother made polenta in a copper bucket placed on (in) a wood stove. (Yes, in the basement--cliche, but true.) After cooking, the browned "chips" on the sides of the bucketwere scraped out as a snack for later. She used to plop the polenta in a linen cloth and close it to retain its shape, and serve it this way on a large wooden (think pizza, but thicker) paddle, with a string tied to the handle of the paddle for cutting. A slow cooker is a great way to keep it warm so it doesn't have to be served immediately.

Gravy was chicken and sausage, cooked until the chicken pulled easily away from the bones, though I like your choice! Cheese was stuffed in the middle of cut polenta, which started to hold shape when it cooled, at the table, on plates, and hot gravy poured on top. This is a great dinner party take on tradition, from cooking to serving!

It doesn't look "unfinished" so much as someone who probably has storage, or simply is not inclined to keep sentimental items, photos, or books around. I live in a 400sf space with a full-size bed and a row of Billy shelves that fit neatly into an inset wall, with space for a loveseat and coffee table. I once lived in a 250sf apt, and really appreciate being able to have a full-size bed rather than a fold-out.

If I could get halfway to where Mary is now by purging books and tchotchkes, tools and craft supplies, I'd be happy, but I can't live without plants, photos and books :)

I also have the Uncle Bob's tapered brown legs on a Karlstad loveseat. It's held up well over 2+ years now and I also replaced the cover. It's the perfect size for my studio and with the legs and cover does not look "Ikea" at all. My other Ikea purchases were a set of narrow Billy bookcases with the backs off that fit flush and are the perfect depth for the inset wall in my apartment. I am using Rast chests in my large closets -- cheaper than a system. I would never want an "Ikea" apartment, but I think it's about balance. It's worth checking user reviews -- the Karlstad ranks more favorably than many other Ikea couches.

I used to love thrift and consignment shopping but ever since a few apartments in my building reported bugs I will never again buy upholstered used furniture in NYC. Too risky. That being said, I'd definitely look for older, well-constructed items rather than just buy mass-market. I have some mid-century furniture that will probably hold up another generation.

This will get me eating my broccoli! I use a cast iron skillet, which really needs very little oil, I like a bit of sesame oil, for flavor. I also use the skillet to cook southern greens like kale, turnip greens, etc and then add a bit of shredded asagio. Heaven!

I've had good luck recently with hemstitch 400 sateen sheets from Overstock. I bought them on sale, but I'd do a search to see if other retailers have them for less.

Has anyone used the Cycloc? Is it sturdy/secure?

I am a bike enthusiast/hobbyist so I always have 2, sometimes 3 bikes. My small studio does have a terrace, which is where I keep bikes during nice weather or when friends are visiting. I have a limited amount of wall space because of large accordion closets--not that I'm complaining about the closets. The cycloc would be over my workspace, in the only available wall for a bike.

My mother is a hoarder. So nice that it's compounded by longtime bipolar ... Not. My brother and I have tried everything short of going to court. It's really rough. I'm not a minimalist but I am orderly, and seeing what this illness does has made me reassess my attachment to... Well, everything.

I just purchased a console/desk-sized walnut slab from a lumber salvage yard for $40. It does have a great live edge... I'm debating how much I want to remove. I love the look of the table pictured. My own inspiration is the Chilton line from Room and Board.

I adore the bookshelves and entertainment unit. If they are custom, they can also be customized. I mean, I could hold onto my used ikea bookshelves for many years, and "customize" them, but they aren't made out of low-impact materials.

It's possible to consider ANY wood furniture as sustainable when it's well-built, uses natural materials, and is treated with non-toxic finishes.

Any designer's home is likely to feel staged because, well, it is. I think most of the negging is from envy. Few people I know can afford what I see here.

Onlly once in many years did I mistakenly set a alarm for the wrong time. I always convert 24-hour time into 12-hour time in my head, which I have to do because the school where I teach uses it on all schedules.

I usually count backwards or forwards from 16:00 since that's what I remember. For a smart person, I'm hopeless!

I had to learn the metric system in 3rd grade, and yet nobody here cares or uses it.....

I can see adding decorative molding around to obscure the blocky feet, on the front and both sides. A color change might be all you need. Other than the dark color and the fact that they were too wide for my inset wall (the only reason I went with Billys) I LIKE the Hemnes bookcases.

@CHRISTINA FROM NO. 29 DESIGN those built-ins look fantastic.

Love all the handmade wood furniture! It's gorgeous, especially the desk. I missed seeing the Rand book on the shelf, but I suppose it'll come in handy if you ever run out of firewood.

I can't push the EASY button until I find it underneath a pile.....

The best way to clean a keyboard is using q-tips slightly dampened with water/rubbing alcohol. Be careful not get them "wet" or push down too hard. This will clear up grime, especially on a light-colored keyboard such as an Apple one.

I have definitely done the "stash a box/bag in the closet" in my studio apt, but mostly I try to deal efficiently with papers by not letting everything pile up. This include mail (junk gets tossed in the trash room before i get on the elevator, everything else opened and filed -- payables in a specific open file; paid bills in their respective files in the cabinet).

@Nonie, fabric adds texture, warmth, and coziness. When I lived in grad student housing, we were not allowed to even paint our leased apartments. My roommate hung a large painting her bf made, but unless one has connections this is not always an easy option. Fabric is easy to pack and transport for a move, which is an inevitability for any grad student.

It looks like a home, and it reflects personality. I'd recommend folding down the duvet cover and adding a colorful throw to the end, because in a small apt the bed is what everyone sees. It would add to the elements already in place, like the fabric on the walls. The kitchen is lovely.

This was posted by Maxwell, so I don't know if emailing the editors will have any effect. Something tells me this may not have been their idea. It does not reflect well on AT or the co-owner who posted it. If it's a ploy, I think it'll backfire.

The comments suggesting other ways to expand or change AT are good ones. My example: I've put a lot of what I've learned from AT to work in my own tiny apt. I have an elderly mother who has developed serous hoarding practices. Her beautiful retirement condo is so crammed with junk it's heartbreaking. She *knows* it affects her well-being and our relationship, but we can't seem to resolve it. I've been surprised to discover how many people my age have parents with this problem. This would be far more topical than, well, porn.

Expanding AT to include spaces that aren't located in major cities, or more posts that don't fall in the presumed class demographic would be nice. A call for DIY projects, for example, where people can submit their entries. This has been such a popular part of AT it could easily be a contest.

@canadianmango, are your greyhounds retired racing greyhounds? My adopted dog died a few years ago, and I've always wanted a greyhound, but my studio apt is a bit small. Are they really canine "couch potatoes" like everyone says?
