Here are a few baby stocking-stuffer ideas: Socks, baby food, spoons, binkies, small reusable containers for snacks or babyfood, hairbows/headbands, lotion/soap/rash cream, mittens, winter hat, sippy cup, little board books, etc.

My parents and in-laws have usually gotten our babies toys for their first Christmases, but I wish they would have gotten them diapers or given us a promise for a night of babysitting!

Tell Us...the Best Gifts for Baby's First Christmas?

We have very small bedrooms in our house (about 9 ft. by 10 ft.) so for us bunkbeds have been the only way to go. I have a 9-year-old and a 4-year-old that use them. Fighting over bunks has never been a problem--I just tell my 4-year-old that he's too little. (Recommended age for top bunk is age 6.) The lower bunk has its advantages, anyway, with its "clubhouse" type of feel. The bunkbeds we bought were from momsbunkhouse.com and I love them--mission style solid wood, and they were $300. They're incredibly sturdy for my boys.

Stanley Coleman was the name of my first (and most well-loved) Cabbage Patch Kid. I didn't rename him, nor call him Stan. He was just always "Stanley Coleman." (My sister had one named Miranda Jo and my mom--don't ask--had one named Alice Cynthie.)

We absolutely call it allowance! That's the money our kids are allowed to have out of our budget, just as we have a certain amount of money allowed for food, clothing, bills, entertainment, etc. My kids DO NOT get money or allowance as compensation for doing chores. They are expected to do their fair share around the house because they are a part of the family, not because they are a paid employee. In our home we use allowance as a money-teaching tool--how to save, how to budget, and how to suffer the consequences of your own money-mistakes. We even have rules about borrowing money: They pay interest!

Wipe warmer, Bumbo, and definitely the Diaper Genie. (It takes several days to fill it up, and by then it stinks to high heaven.) Also, we didn't need most of the infant toys we owned. I wish I would have had two small baskets of baby toys and rotated them every other week.

What Did You Think You Couldn't Live Without...But Can?

I say skip the changing table altogether. We just bought a few waterproof pads (larger than diaper-bag size... more like the size that you'd use to put in a crib or bassinet) and we just changed our babies on our bed. I bought a pretty basket to put next to our nightstand to keep supplies at reach--diapers, wipes, cream, etc.--and when the waterproof pad wasn't being used, I'd just fold it up and put it in the basket.

Is this a friend or family member that you care about? If so, I don't think you should feel so put out at having been invited to her shower, whether it's her 2nd baby or her 10th. Moms of newborns need support, and as for the diapers: Everyone chooses to diaper their babies in different ways. Probably some people think it's silly to diaper in cloth, but wouldn't necessarily take a moral stand against it. How about a gift card for baby, or a gift for mom--like nice lotion, a casserole to freeze, or an i.o.u. for babysitting? If this isn't a friend that you want to be bothered with supporting, then just don't bother. Throw away the invitation, and don't give it another thought.

You could focus on one specific aspect of Halloween, such as monsters, spiders, etc. I always like to give CDs out as favors, with kid songs relating to the theme. My friend did this recently with a monster party she threw and there were some great songs on there-- Purple People Eater; Monster Mash, etc.
