I had that hammer when I was four or five, in the miniature tool kit my dad made for me. I loved disassembling and reassembling it over and over.

We had a nightmare of an autumn when getting the trees trimmed led to having to replace the sewer line. The tree guy added on-- without our permission-- fertilizing our maples, which involved metal poles being driven deep into the ground. At just about the spot that he drove in (a neighbor saw; we were at work), our aging sewer line collapsed. We had to excavate the driveway, and an entire lawn to replace the line. It looks like trench warfare out there now.

The line was old, sure, but we'd had no problems before the tree guys decided to fertilize. Routine tree maintenance turned into an almost $10,000 sewer replacement, we had to get an abatement crew to detox the basement, and we'll have to wait until spring to fix the driveway and the lawn. I don't think there's enough evidence to go after the tree guy, but it's infuriating. The new rule in this old house is "don't mess with anything!" because you're liable to open up much bigger problems than you've started with.

When Small Projects Turn … Very, Very Big

@Isa, @Tamarind: In Japan, a bowl of rice with chopsticks stuck straight up is placed at the head of the deceased, so it's not just representative, but an actual funeral rite.

It's fine to put chopsticks upright in a cup for dispensing, but this upright display doesn't really sit right with me. The shape of them is reminiscent of chopsticks stuck in rice, not grouped in a container.

When chopsticks are displayed in stores, they are displayed horizontally, perhaps suspended on small floating shelves. There are a number of rules for wielding chopsticks, and the way that you handle them shows respect for the chopsticks, and by extension, the food you receive.

I appreciate the clever and lively display, but the cuteness can't overcome what strikes me as a vaguely distasteful display.

Just buy a "G" and stick it in front of your "Rs"

Then you'll have Grrrrrrrrrr

throw in an A, a G, and an H and then you'll have

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh

You can know that your Rs are there, and enjoy them, but they'll be cheeky, not self-centered.

My mother has a cookie recipe that seems to work much better in her glass bowl mixer than in her KitchenAid. She thinks there is a difference with the way the butter whips. I've wondered about the reaction of recipes with citrus in the metal bowl, so I'd love to get a glass bowl for the KitchenAid I've already got.

Speaking of bad timing, Sexy Anteater, I kept putting off buying my KitchenAid thinking that I'd just register for it. A year after I gave up and thought, can't put off a mixer for a man, I got engaged. Oh well!

I lived very comfortably in a 600 sq. foot apartment by myself. I just moved my fiance in, and we are bursting at the seams, even with the very modest amount of stuff that he brought. I had to move out of a closet for him, and every area-- the pantry, the bathroom cabinet, bookshelves, carving out a work space for him-- needs optimized organization. A life change like this is stressful enough without the space constraints!
