We now do "want, need, wear, read" for our kids (ages 8 & 4). They also receive one gift from Santa, and they both make the other a gift. This has worked out incredibly well for all of us. It was challenging to really focus in on the specific categories, but everyone was happy with the outcome. Do Our Children Expect Too Much for Christmas? the frugal girl |

What's going to be more awkward..... watching her open a gift that is not exactly what she asked for, or seeing your gift go unused because it's not what she wanted? Yes, the All-Clad is expensive, but if it's what she wants, try buying her a piece or two to start with. The All-Clad is amazing but an investment. Start small. I personally would shy away from buying an entire set of cookware, as I feel half of it is under-used (my own experience). And I too have heard good things about Cookware and More. This seems like another universal confirmation of the "Good, Fast, or Cheap" theory. You can sometimes get 2 of those, but never all 3. I agree that you should alert IKEA to the issue - they should not be handing their business to sub-par contractors. I would think that there are plenty of contractors who are hungry for business right now. Best of luck in getting this resolved quickly. Definitely a bold choice, and if she likes it, then it is successful. I am intrigued that she painted the cabinets in ONE day. I've been thinking of painting my brown cabinets white, and have read repeatedly that it is a long, intensive process to do it right (10 days to dry the doors). I've made graham cracker gingerbread houses with the kids for the last few years, and we use cardboard 6pack carriers (beer) as the base. Works perfectly, and the house is just the right size. A Very Easy Gingerbread House To Make El hada de papel |

I bought plain red Hable stockings on super clearance last year. They are wool felt, oversized, with a simple dot and scallop trim. This is the first time our family of 4 has had matching stockings, and I LOVE them. I decorated wooden ornaments with scrapbook initials in place of having them monogrammed (will probably do that another year). Where Do You Stand On Stockings? Reader Survey |

We bought a dark brown microfiber sofa for this very reason, and although it has been AMAZING over the last 6 years & 2 kids, it is time to try out some cleaning magic! Hope it's colorfast.... How To Clean The Kid Out Of Your Microfiber Couch Imperfect Homemaking |

I totally agree that this is a weird list. I would never bring a pair of socks to a dinner party and hand them off as a hostess gift....well, maybe I would if I didn't want to be invited back. I once read that food/ alcohol are not good hostess gifts, as then the hostess feels obligated to immediately use them, possibly disrupting her meal plan. Personally, I'd MUCH rather receive a sincere thank you note after the party rather than a last-minute, thoughtless "gift" the night of the event. 10 Gifts Anyone Can Use |

My son is 3.5 and we just stopped using the pull-ups at night. He does well, but still has an "accident" about once a week. I have to echo what the others have said: just watch his diapers, wait until he's consistently dry in the mornings, go potty immediately before bedtime, and buy a second set of sheets + a good waterproof mattress cover (I still put a towel over the mattress pad for extra insurance). If he's dry during long outings & naps, ditch the diapers, buy some better quality underpants (I personally love Gap and Gymboree - lots of sales & very soft), and ask him if he needs to potty every time you enter a store/ every hour. 5 minutes in the bathroom is a small price to pay to get rid of the diapers! Splurge: couch, mattresses, sheets. Save: everything else. Make it, save for it, thrift it, or wait for it to get marked down. Style is everywhere & at every price point, but if I have to sit on it or lay on it, it's gonna be brand new & untouched. Where Do You Spend vs. Save at Home? |

I didn't know the neighbors would let their barky Basset hounds out at 5am every morning. I didn't know they also liked to feed the local squirrel/ bird population, which left a huge mess all over our yard. I didn't know that there was no insulation in the roof or walls, so our gas bill would be $200+ in January (for about 800sf). The Things You Didn't Know When You Moved In |

I found a set of All-Clad pots & pans for $24 (8 pieces in all). The outsides had been destroyed because they were put in the dishwasher, but the insides are now pristine. I use them every day & they make cooking a pleasure. What Thrift Store Find Do You Treasure Most? |

I started making chewy granola bars based on a recipe from Smitten Kitchen. My whole family loves them! We keep a container in the fridge & reach for them daily. I appreciate that I can use what I have & also control the amount of sweet that goes into them. Try it! Make or Buy? Granola Bars |

I made this last week & have snacked on the leftovers for the last few days. I am in love. I used to think that separate beds/ bedrooms was a recipe for divorce. Now that I have small children and a husband who snores periodically, I would give almost anything for a twin bed to retreat to once in a while. I don't want a room of my own, but it would be nice to get more than 4 hours of sleep in a row. Sleeping Style: Twin Beds |

I've done silhouettes for my own home, but hadn't considered doing it for the grandparents (gift x 4 is sometimes a lot to think about). The silhouettes seriously took just a few hours to make (drying time for the paint), and look so fantastic in a simple frame. Non-Cheesy Gifts for Grandparents |

My daughter was gifted a plastic, electronic keyboard several years ago. I hate that toy with a passion, but she - and now her brother - LOVE it. They play with it almost every day, and I can't bring myself to take away something that brings them so much happiness. Toys Worth the Aesthetic Sacrifice |

Our first house contained a brick front fireplace that the previous owners tried to spice up with glossy magenta latex paint (it was lovely with the peach wallpaper). After trying to strip it off (don't bother), I painted over it with Ralph Lauren river rock paint in a neutral cream color. The end result was 10,000 times better than what we began with, and I wouldn't hesitate to do it again if the situation presented itself. Colorful Painted Fireplaces |
