Am I the only one around here who doesn't/can't afford to change her bedding with the season?

I really like the look of a well used marble countertop and I love butcher blocks for islands. I like things to look tidy but used. I don't mind granite. quartz or corian (sp?) but it drives me bonkers that granite seems to be the be-all and end-all for home buyers on HGTV.

Strange! I was just reminiscing about all the black painted brick in Amsterdam on my walk home today. Very high style.

Good work! I've been eyeing that printed quilt for a while. Seeing it in a real life setting now, I might just have to buy it!

I live a few blocks away and sauntered by the Windsor Arms last week. *Lovely* building.

A friend has an identical looking living room, mind it's enclosed across from the fireplace rather than having a staircase. Windows, brick, trim is all the same though as the home is from the same era.

They have the couch across from the fireplace (if it doesn't impede traffic), a chair on either side of the fireplace and the TV mounted above.

Is that VCT (vinyl composite tile) flooring throughout? I'm having trouble coming to terms with it in my own rental but it looks great here!

I think a lot of the problem can be solved by hiding the smaller patterned tiles that directly enclose the opening with a fireplace screen flanked by plants.

Ahhh! The curtains are stressing me out. Install something floor to ceiling. Get some art and shelving on those walls in various places and the television won't be so dominant.

Am I the only one who's never had a landlord who either wouldn't allow painting or put it in the lease that you had to return the walls to their original colour? I've always been told by my landies that tasteful colours are A-OK.

If required, I will change light fixtures, paint, change hardware, put up shelves.

^ For the headboard. I made one, and it is perfeeeect. You can customize the height to your needs, of course, by choosing the proper size canvas stretcher and hanging it at the preferred height.

It's really not that bad. You just need some colour infusion via accents. I'm really into peacock blue accents right now. They'd contrast nicely against the blondish wood. Try a bold colour and texture on your shade, then add accessories in the same shade. Think statement vases, maybe some mugs hung under the cabinet, a runner in front of the counter.

My Conair blowdryer has a retractable cord. Score! I highly recommend it. We don't often use anything else electric in the bathroom.

It depends on the quality of the trim. If it's a softwood like pine (which it appears to be from the one photo), I would have no trouble painting it, personally. Especially if it's nice and wide, a nice white with a bit of sheen adds drama, where the current wood is just folksy looking.

If it's a gorgeous hardwood (think maple, cherry), then restore it to its glorious beginnings. Also, I noticed that the walls are blue. If you decide to keep the original trim, I'd say go with a warm cream. I think any "real" colours look silly with wood trim.

Sometimes the inherent character of a home necessitates building a style around it.
