I try my best as some have already said - to find a middle ground. Some pieces are bought for function, others for form. With main pieces i tend to be less trendy. With sofas there are so many price levels. To me comfort is the most important thing and second to that - it has to fit into my space. I also find that material grade makes a huge difference in wear and tear. It would be almost impossible for me to find a sofa second hand. But I never buy retail or at list price. There is almost always a sale- a least twice a year when merchandise is refreshed or floor samples that have been marked down. Got my bed 23 years ago that way and still love it. But I do buy second hand case goods and tables and have done quite well. I think the secret is to know your dimensions and shop around and look at merchandise in the stores to see quality/determine if I like something so when it hits the secondhand market I can pounce quickly, like I did recently on a coffee table that was $1200 originally and I picked up for $300. Move all the furniture! The dining table should be parallel to the kitchen. Move the couch under the picture and move the purple chair where the couch is, turned towards the couch. A big tree / plant in the window corner to warm up the space, No cocktail table. Maybe a side table with a nice lamp to make it cozy. More room for kids to play. Maybe a couple of the upholstered stools that can move around. Coffee Table Style & Size for Small Space? Good Questions |

The fire place mantel has to go! I might also consider tiling over the brick, putting a slab of soapstone or marble on the bricks on the bottom make I a little longer to be a able to sit by the fire. I do that in my apartment in NYC and love it. How To Deal with Awkward Fireplace Location? Good Questions |

I like a lot of the suggestions. I would definitely paint the fireplace - seems like such an eyesore - to blend in better with the wall and paint the wall the same color to downplay it as much as possible. The wall will look less choppy and the fireplace will be like a decorative item. I liked someone's idea of creating a floor to ceiling entertainment cabinet. A sectional against the wall across from the unit would give three views - tv, outside and fireplace. There would be several focal points then. A rug would pull it together. Watch Herb and Dorothy (The Vogels) on Netflix. Art collectors during the 60's /70's/80's. Herb was a mail sorter at the post office and she was a librarian ( I think). They amassed a an outstanding collection of more than 4,000 pieces of art work in their one bedroom apartment. They had a terrific ability to recognize important pieces. Fascinating. I have been purging everything in my apartment and storage room it seems forever! Every season brings new piles to give away or donate. Living in NYC in a small space makes me edit constantly. Books are not my problem - although I am sure a few could go. My problem is my hubby and child as some have already mentioned. I most own every computer cable since 1980 because "we may need it sometime". UGH! And my problem is I love to acquire. I just don't really need most of it, just like hanging on to a few things which remind me of the past. I agree with the buy better and less. How To Declutter Your Home |

Room and Board - $899 / The Encore - it offers a lot of flexibility and seems very easy to raise and lower the back - similar to the Ligne Roset but 1/3 of the price. Only problem is the size is neither twin nor full - but somewhere in between. I like the red option. Best Sleeper Sofas Sofa Beds 2010 | Apartment Therapy New York |

Melissa - you hate the shades down. Got it. So replace the shades with something similar - roller or roman in a different color - I always go neutral so that if you paint again, you don't have to replace. Roller is cheaper. You can add interest with a ribbon detail along the sides or bottom - with a glue gun. Alternatively you can do a solar shade - they now come in patterns. I agree with Bo. I had a dark red brick fireplace with black mortar about 8 feet long - I live in a prewar apt on the UWS of NYC. We painted it white - the same color as the walls and I have loved it for 18 years. Our neighbors did a white wash on theirs and I liked that too. It is important to know that the brick and mortar is very porous and "eats" a lot of paint. Some of my neighbors also plastered over the brick and some put up drywall. I have a contemporary / eclectic space and it works well. It really depends on your furniture as to what you should do. Apartment Therapy Chicago | Should I Paint this Brick Fireplace? I just saw this in Brooklyn this weekend and thought the quality looked pretty good. They were not cheap looking at all. I have all expensivie furniture in my apartment and I would use these if I had the room. Sorry to hear the drawers were so painful. That is disappointing.
