That said, there were times when I just really really wanted to drive to whole foods and have everything I needed in one place!!! Hauling a granny cart around Paris and then up 3 flights of stairs for a week straight just to stock up for a party was not that fun ;-)

I think what makes shopping every day (or very often) in European cities possible (and not a pain in the a$$) is that everything you need is always a step away. You can literally pick up all the ingredients for dinner in 5 minutes on your walk home from work because the city is planned that way-- grocery stores, open markets, butchers, cheesemongers, etc sprinkled on just about every block. Even the corner convenience stores all sell fruits and vegetables. If my only option was Wal-Mart I would be planning as few trips there as possible too!

The market in Nice is nice (haha) but fairly touristy. I'd swap in the Sunday market along the river in Bordeaux. Beautiful produce, amazing breads, butchers and fishmongers galore...all finished up with a glass of wine and fresh oysters! Now that's the way to shop...

My dad taught me how to change a flat tire (by making me practice on all 4 wheels of the family car before being allowed to drive it). I can't tell you how many times that's come in handy - including once on the Jersey Turnpike with 2 strapping young men with me who had no idea what to do. A few years later I had to teach my husband!

I really enjoyed it - especially loved the summer manifesto bit as well! I think the editorial has a revived personality and feels very accessible. Get over the Gwenyth hate and give it a try!

we were visiting my brother in law last year, and our niece (who's 9) had a birthday party at a gym-playground type place. we were SHOCKED to learn that both my bro in law and his wife and all the other parents STAYED at the party, just kind of awkwardly sitting around until it was over. It was so weird.

Are Dinner Time "Phone Breaks" Good Tech Etiquette?

Phones out during a meal (unless it's an absolute emergency, but still - that's what vibrate mode is for!) is so ridiculously rude. If you can't wait the length of a meal to check twitter or facebook or your email, then you should probably just stick to virtual friends and never leave your apartment.

Here in Paris, I've had oeufs en cocotte with herbs, gruyere, and a few slivers of foie gras...HEAVEN ON EARTH.

I have these glasses from Crate and Barrel:

You can buy lids (ok they're plastic, but not really touching your food!) that snap right on. They're perfect for single portion leftovers, the bigger ones for soups and sauces. And you can drink out of them! Dual use. I love it.

I vow to do many incredibly selfless things for my child. But I draw the line at sucking their boogers out with a straw.
