i have the ikea karlstad, the cushion covers just zip off and go in standard washing machine/dryer, but to take off the covers from the arms and back you'd have to disassemble the couch most of the way. those fit in std washer/drier too (we bought it 2nd hand and washed everything on the way into our house) nonetheless, it's very comfortable and aesthetically inoffensive. if you replace the clunky ikea feet with something like http://www.tablelegs.com/Legs/OtherLegs/Bun-Feet/Mid-Century-Modern-Furniture-Feet.aspx it's almost sleek. i kind of love the look, but it seems like a tricky thing to implement, both aesthetically (slap some paint on it, #1 and #4) and functionally (a position the for the ladder when not in use that doesn't obstruct other kitchen tasks) Sliding Library Ladders in the Kitchen Kitchen Inspiration |

yeah, i'd just use the dough you have. sprinkle some sugar on top before you bake the pie, maybe add a pinch of salt to the filling, and i doubt anyone will be able to tell the difference. pie crust is really just there for structure/texture anyway. re: stuff on the counters, you can't really use the back half of the counter under the cabinets for prep work anyway, so if you're low on storage area, why not? letting junk pile up there is one thing, but this looks like a carefully selected set of things they use frequently. also, if you like to watch TV while cooking, where else would you put it? this is a great idea, since i hate cluttering that ~1ft gap between upper cabinets and 8' ceiling, but our kitchen is so small we need the space. i'm trying to plan a way to rearrange the cabinets (new ones not in the budget), add some open shelving and hopefully free up the closet we've been using as a pantry, since it's the only closet on the first floor. you'd think whoever "designed" the house would have thought of this stuff.. i just slice it in half along the crease, pull the halves apart and pry the pit out. then peel each half with a paring knife. if it's really ripe the skin will come off in large pieces even without blanching, and i'm rarely eager to boil a large pot of water during peach season. My mom has Celiac, so I've made quite a few gluten free birthday cakes, and a mixture of 2 parts brown rice flour to 1 part sweet rice flour (like mochi flour, I get a thai brand at the asian market) is a decent substitute for all purpose flour in pretty much any cake recipe. I'm looking for a new bedroom color, in Ben Moore, since I can get their zero-VOC line at our local paint store. I want something in the grey family that will work well with raw linen curtains. Soothing Paint Colors for a Relaxing Bedroom |

I'm in a similar situation; i want to take down the cabinets and put up open shelving, but my husband objects. We removed all the cabinet doors so now it's sort of halfway in between and neither of us really likes it. Can I "Fake" Frameless Cabinets? Good Questions |

as Gaidig said, you have to count the whole package of living expenses including transportation, and consider that it's only in large cities that it's really feasible to live without a car. well, then i guess it's still a matter of personal preference. We just bought a 3br condo in greater Boston for just under $300k, and can get unlimited public transportation for $60/mo, which along with the occasional zipcar is totally sufficient. I can vouch for rugman.com. we bought ourselves a 10'x13' persian rug from there as a wedding present to ourselves. It was on sale for something like $600, and has the imperfections that show it was hand made. I'm thinking of getting it appraised to find out how much it's actually worth, but in some ways I don't want a number to put on it. High & Low Sources for Traditional Rugs Shopper's Guide |
