Hmm, I've been super happy with my big piece of plastic baby tub. I received it as a gift, if I was buying it myself I might have looked for something less space intensive like that cool Danish one. My daughter is almost two and she bathes in it because I don't want to waste water filling up the whole tub. We fill it in the bath tub and just bathe her in the baby tub in the big tub. We store it in the big bath tub (after the bath, dump the water and rinse).... if someone is using the big tub/shower the baby tub just gets leaned against the bathroom wall temporarily. No hassles, minimal water usage.

These aren't all pantry items, but I'll add to it:
-no salt added cottage cheese - my 19 mo. old destroys cottage cheese... can also be added into pasta for protein and calcium. However regular cottage cheese is pretty salty for their little bodies so I recommend the no salt added, if you can find it.
-frozen blueberries. I generally run low on fresh fruit first and then make it to the grocery store a day or two later. The girl loves defrosted blueberries almost as much as fresh, and they defrost in 10-15 min. just at room temp.
-polenta - she loves the stuff as much as rice.
-tofu - not exactly a pantry item but it keeps for a long time unopened in the fridge. She loves it raw, straight from the package.
-olives - a little salty but at least it's developing her palate?

There's a heck of a lot of difference between noise (and I absolutely agree that loud dogs are annoying) and a plume of known carcinogens. How bout this, when your smoke gets into my face, I'll just throw some uranium dust at you, cool? Then we're even on the lung damage.

Keep up the good work! Pumping at work is hard, I just recently finished. I'm still breastfeeding my 11 month old in the morning and night, but am happy to be done pumping. And yes it always made me sooo hungry!
For a long time I was bringing all sort of snacks - trail mix, cookies, oat bran or oatmeal (rolled oats cooked the microwave) - but eventually I basically just started doubling the size of my lunch and eating one lunch at 10:30 or 11 and a second at 1:30 or 2. Which might not be feasible for everyone but worked for me. So instead of bringing snacks, I'd just bring two sandwiches, two pieces of lasagna, or a gigantic bowl of rice and stirfry to eat in two sittings... somehow this seemed easier to me than trying to find good snacks.

I'm not strongly against the sale of it, but don't seek it out myself. Sure, people drank it in the day, but a lot of them did get sick and die!! Certainly not all from milk, but advances in hygiene and pasteurization have brought the infant and child mortality rates down by a lot. I agree with previous comments that even a very trustworthy farmer could still let some bad milk through the cracks unintentionally.
Also, the breast milk comment is ridiculous and offensive to me as a nursing mother. First of all, I don't have to worry about breast milk cause my baby drinks it from the source! Probably most of the dairy milk contamination comes from the processing equipment - milkers, tubing, etc. I also used to donate some excess breast milk to a local milk bank which DOES pasteurize it before its given to premature babies who desperately need it. So I'm not sure what's "funny" about your comment.

This is sooooo on track!!! I have an 8 month old and when she was born we got waaaayyy too much heavy stuff: lasagna, casseroles, pasta salads. But don't get me wrong it was still awesome to be showered with love. All I wanted was something with lots of veggies and fiber (fiber for new mom problems that are probably a little tmi for this comments section). When a friend brought over veggie and bean curry I was so excited.
Also the myth that breastfeeding moms can't have spicy stuff is so annoying. That's all I wanted! Maybe some babies are bothered by it but I would venture a guess that it's a small, small fraction.

Meals for New Moms: Make Lunch!

@Francine ... hear you on the pregnancy requiring more meals, now I am breastfeeding and that seems to ramp up my appetite even more than pregnancy did. I had oatmeal for breakfast, 2 cheese sticks at around 10. Lunch part A (apple and sandwich) was at 12, and I'll eat something else at around 3 probably.
My 8month old daughter is now getting about 700 calories from my breastmilk, so that's basically 2 extra meals in my book. Luckily I love eating! Best part is that it got rid of the pregnancy weight right quick!

Cooks illustrated just had some recipes and tips... they said to get big chunks firmly pack the granola onto the cookie sheet. Bake without stirring it. You'll need to use a low temp to avoid burning since you're not stirring. CI said 325 but I might go a little lower since my oven tends to have hot spots. Then break it up after its done. Haven't tried it yet but plan to!

Thinly sliced kohlrabi "chips" (chip sized slices) are the perfect vehicle for hummus or really any dip. Only caveat is that it oxidizes rather quickly so best not to prep ahead.

I like putting rhubarb in lentil soup or stewed lentils... with spinach too! I don't have a recipe but it works kind of like lemon would. There's a lot of recipes if you google it.

This is kind of random, but I have a kitchen trash can from Simple Human. Not super expensive, purchased at Target almost five years ago. The pedal that opens the lid just broke, and I checked their website to see if it could be remedied. To my delight, they have an easy to use tool to identify what trash can you have and sent me the replacement part free of charge and within days, along with easy to follow instructions to change it. I couldn't believe it!

Also Savory Spice Shop in the Denver metro area (and expanding to some more locations) is just great. The personnel are soooo helpful and the products are wonderful.

I'm surprised about the kind works for Kitchenaid, they did NOT replace our ice cream maker attachment or even offer any sort of discount on a problem that was pretty clearly a defect.

Don't try to catch a glass whatever (French press carafe in this case) as it is impacting hard surface (dishwasher rack) after falling.
If you can catch it midair (or do a hackeysack shoe cradle move to lessen the impact, if you're wearing shoes - I've successfully done this, even in socks once which is not recommended) go for it, but the last second scoop while impacting move gave me a pretty good cut once.

I just pre-ordered the adagio one that heats to different temps (for tea) and can hold a temp for 20 minutes. No, I don't need it, but it's a graduation present to myself... I could get by without one, sure, but I use our current crappy plastic one it at least twice a day! And my husband always steals it and brings it to the bathroom for shaving, so now, the plastic one will live in the bathroom and be exclusively for shaving!

I'm too pregnant to eat a lot at dinner right now - if I eat what I used to consider a large dinner, I can't sleep. So I eat a larger lunch spaced out from about 11am to 4pm. Example - fruit at 11, sandwich and soup at 12:30, hard boiled egg at 3:30. Then I don't need to eat so much dinner. I might keep the trend post baby.

Agreed on the yuck factor, you must have cleaner cabinets than me. I also want that type of thing in easier reach than having to pull out a step stool. Mine wouldn't look as nice cause there's a lip so anything up there is lower than the edge of the cabinet. Also lentils would probably be fine, but grains are better kept in the dark, no?

I've done a couple things that have been well received:
1. Homemade marshmallows and hot cocoa mix (Alton Browns recipes on both accounts)
2. Waffle mix, I made a variation of the multi grain recipe on 101 cookbooks, and gave a card with instructions on the wet ingredients.
3. Home made granola
4. Rosemary walnuts from the gourmet cookbook.

As a science teacher I've done a fair amount with classroom cooking ... teaching technology in the context of cooking doesn't seem quite as natural to me but that's prob why I'm not a technology teacher! I guess it depends what your goals are but here's a few ideas:
-Convert a bare bones recipe into a blog/tv cooking show type format (like suggestion 2)
-Start a wiki of class recipes - ask each student to bring their 4 favorite recipes - maybe from their mom's files or a random cookbook - then have them try to figure out a consistent way of formatting them and making them searchable and classifiable for the wiki. Bonus points for simple features like making a little program that converts the ingredient list to a shopping list (with the vegetables listed together...etc.)

I make them a lot - I love the taste of sweetened condensed milk in them, but I usually try to make them a little less calorific.
1/2 or 1 avocado
juice of 1/2 a lime
20 ozs of soy milk
2-4 tablespoons sweetened condensed milk
handful ice
Blend, serves 2.
This makes a much thinner smoothie than typical Vietnamese style. Not as decadent, but definitely tasty and refreshing. I like the lime taste too.
