I love the ones with more than 2 compartments, but the only ones I've ever seen in a decent price range are exactly like the first one in the list. I wish I could find something more unique!

I have only about 12 linear feet of countertop, not including my portable island… so I only "display" things that are functional, like my more attractive small appliances (i.e. my kitchenaid stand mixer) that I use frequently enough to justify leaving out.

That's exactly what I did on my Thanksgiving centerpiece, & it was so inexpensive! I used things like dried beans & mini pumpkins, & it turned out beautifully! http://bit.ly/aG2DUs

Only on a few occasions have I seen hostess gifts given - mainly when an overnight stay is involved. Hostess gifts are not totally unheard of in the South - but most of the time, like many people have said - it's all about the company, and a thank-you note will suffice.

I'm an interior designer by day, & I'd like to recommend a couple sites to you - www.iida.org , & www.asid.org . IIDA & ASID members are interior designers (not decorators - there's a difference) who have to uphold strict standards & have certain levels of formal education in interior design. You can read up on it on the websites, & find directories of qualified interior designers in your area.

A qualified designer will know how to make the most of your budget (& respect your budget), no matter how small - & don't worry about the size of the project - because in this economy, there will be someone who will be more than happy to take on that type of project.

As far as organizing goes: I highly recommend www.unclutterer.com .

Hope this helps!

I totally agree w/ Kristaparis, and TMV. If you spend the whole time cooking and cleaning up after everyone, you've missed the whole point of having everyone over - to enjoy their company.

I see nothing wrong w/ using some attractive paper plates (although I'd definitely stay away from plastic and especially styrofoam for obvious reasons). Also, I'd use real silverware, cause sometimes plastic just doesn't "cut it" (pun intended).

Sometimes you just have to tell people where to sit to avoid an awkward family situation. Unfortunately everyone's family isn't perfect. :)

Wonderful paint job! Looks great! Although the rug looks great - personally I'd rather have one I could throw in the washing machine, cause kitchen rugs get NASTY if you cook a lot like I do, but a great makeover, indeed!

Ok, at second glance, mine are identical to the last ones shown in this post - only those came from Amazon, not BB&B… Those work SO well, seriously.

You can never be too careful, I've put drinks on surfaces that I thought were indestructible, only to find out otherwise, & be sad later. I love the stone ones from Bed Bath & Beyond that actually absorb all the drips - fabulous!

Cranberries are my favorite thing about the holidays! So cool that they float. What a great & colorful idea! Funny that you mentioned mason jars - cause I actually just did a post about a Thanksgiving centerpiece that incorporates THREE different sizes of mason jars! Check it out: http://bit.ly/c3mm9N

I like Tiny Prints… although it's not cheap either… (all of these are too expensive for my taste) it's got a huge variety, and you do get a little more bang for the buck.

Why don't you just "upholster" the tiles? You could use a little bit of spray adhesive, and some cool fabric that compliments your bedding, patch up & paint the metal tracks as well as you can, and it'd be a whole new look. If not that, I'd build some kind of giant L-shaped valance, and mount it to the wall/ceiling to cover the whole thing up.
