Wonderful post Anjali, thank you. I do think that genetics (if it is even the correct term) mean our bodies process food in different ways and there is no 'one food system fits all bodies'. Not that I've any way of proving that, but I like to think that centuries of Mediterranean ancestors mean my response to specific foods is going to be different from my friends of Celtic/northern heritage now I've moved to Scotland. Similarly many studies now advocate various ways of eating breakfast, which I've tried and tried before finding that the large breakfast/light dinner system my family's always done suits me way better in terms of balancing blood sugar levels and maintaining weight.

What works for me may not work for my friends and vice versa. And as Anjali said, sometimes it's just plain exhausting having people look at me funny because I'm not interested in trying yet new diets.
This being said, I couldn't help but cringe a bit at some comments calling vegetarians 'fad dieters' or going on about paleo being a lifestyle and not a diet. I'm vegetarian and don't care about what other people eat and don't want to have to justify my choices (a while back a newly vegan friend spent her time lecturing us about what we should eat or not, it was ANNOYING). I wish we could simply make our own choices without people going on and on about how to label them..

Hah I didn't realise it was that popular! :) But if you do get the opportunity to go, it's beautiful..
Now I'm off to see if I can find a similar poster to brighten up my own kitchen!

I'm originally from Provence and nougat is one of my favourite food groups, hah! Actually white and dark nougats are part of the traditional "13 Christmas desserts" there.

I've never attempted making white nougat at home as the recipes are a bit tricky, but dark nougat is pretty easy to make (and egg-free, for the vegans here) as it's mainly caramel. I've never seen white nougat with dried fruit though - it's generally just almond or almond and pistachio. It sounds tasty though!

What's with the general assumption that the greens aren't edible? So many people say that (and same about scallions, go figure). I've always eaten the green part of the leeks, as long as the leaves aren't damaged, and they're delicious. They give the leeky taste to the dish and not just the onion-y one. Excellent in everything from soups to gratins!

Another vote for the Best Cut-Out Sugar Cookies! I always bring cakes and cookies to work, but when I made those last year I seriously had people lining up outside my office to tell me how good they were. Making them later this week!

Wow, lots of harsh comments! I hate (HATE) food waste as much as the next person, but the idea of declining a well-meaning gift strikes me as extremely rude and selfish. I would personally be hurt if a friend declined my box of chocolates for any of the reasons mentioned above.

Many AT posts deal with getting rid of unnecessary clutter and to me this post addressed the same issue with food. You wouldn't donate half-used bottles of shampoo or used underwear - same goes with half-eaten bags of candy. And getting rid of clothes that were never worn is just the same 'waste', the difference is that we have a different relationship to food. The Kitchn regularly suggests ways to reduce food waste anyway! So I hope all the harsh comments come from people who never had to throw away a moldy onion or lettuce that was forgotten in the fridge, or leftover milk gone sour before they had time to use the whole bottle...

Healthy Holidays: On Being Okay With Throwing Out the Candy

I usually bring things like that to the office. I don't really have a sweet tooth (a block of cheese doesn't last the day in my fridge though) so I eat candies because they're in front of me, not because I want them. And it makes the coworkers happy!

GENIUS. The yeast always expires waaaay before I've even used 1/8th of it (no-knead bread doesn't require much yeast)!

In the UK treacle pudding and treacle tart are very common - treacle is basically golden syrup. For instance http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/treacletart_67656 - and yes, it's very, very sweet. Never really got into them.
