Not bad. Missed the Painted Ladies and the beadboard. Neither of which can be found in any neighborhood I ever lived in. Design Quiz: Test Your Architecture IQ |

Oh, I loved my Danby dishwasher! I had a rental house with a small galley kitchen and no dishwasher. I am lazy about hand washing dishes so I bought the Danby. It did a great job at washing the dishes. It was perfect! When not in use I could easily roll it into the laundry room so it was out of the way. I had dozens of responses to buy it when I posted it on Craigslist when I moved to house with a built in dishwasher. Mini Might: Small Versions of Big Things |

I had a tiny one bedroom apartment in a circa 1920 bungalow court in Phinney Ridge. It had a working wood burning fireplace and huge north and south facing windows. There were several huge walk-in closets. The ceilings were a good height and the place had amazing character. The old bathtub was deep enough to soak in. My unit came with its own garage as well as storage in the basement laundry room. There were heirloom rose bushes across from my front door. I had great neighbors and super low rent in one of the great walkable neighborhoods in Seattle. I lived there for a long time until I fell in love. We moved in together and now own a house. But I really miss that little bungalow space and the neighborhood and wish I could return. The Home That Got Away |

Do you have a local library? A music school nearby? Libraries sometimes have enclosed study carrels and/or listening rooms. They are often quiet enough to record in. A local business with an unused conference room might rent it to you. I have encountered this problem before and luckily I live within driving distance of a large university. It was in between class sessions so I was able to talk my way into using a university study carrel to get a recording done. What If I Can't Work from Home Due To Neighbor's Construction? I agree with the general consensus: get an alarm system, clear foliage away from doors and windows, do not get a dog just for security, keep electronics out of sight, fortify doors and windows and get to know your neighbors. I also put up removable tinting on the window my cat likes to sit in during the day so she can see out, but people cannot see in. High and Low Tech Security Options for Bungalow? Good Questions |

Both my partner and I are photographers so we have between us a large collection of cameras. We display them a few at a time on a bookshelf in the living room. We rotate them periodically, though we have favorites. Almost all of them are still functional. I can tell they are popular right now because it is suddenly more expensive to pick up some types of old cameras. Especially those with simple shapes or deco embellishments. I want to go on a world tour, visiting every continent. It would be amazing to spend as much time as I wanted in places that interest me. I would love to live 2-6 months in all of my favorite cities: Paris, Venice, Santa Fe, Carmel, New York and Montauban. What's Your Dream Destination? |

I have a small, one-story, 1950's era tract home, just two bedrooms and one bath. There is nothing special about the house, no charming or quirky architectural details. It still needs a lot of work. But I do love these attributes: What I Love About My Home: A Gratitude List |

I chose this exact color scheme in my home. I wanted the contrast between dark walls and strong bright light coming in from skylights and large windows. The window coverings are white cotton, thin enough to let light in, but opaque enough to provide privacy. I chose light neutral colored carpets and sofa, and light colored wood for tables and bookshelves. I agree with other posts that you need bright reflective surfaces to scatter light around. I have this bed in full size. I've had it for six years. It proved to be surprisingly sturdy and really good looking. I am not a tiny person and neither is my partner. I use it with slats and no box spring. It is very similar to shaker four poster beds (not as refined but definitely similar). I really love how high it is off the floor. I was renting a 950 square foot house and wanted to buy something larger: more bedrooms, and at least one and a half bathrooms. Prices for a single family home with the square footage I wanted in move in ready condition turned out to be far beyond my budget. What 'Must-Haves' Did You Let Go Of When Buying Your First Home? |

Come as close as you can to the real thing. There are so many ways today to acquire authentic pieces that with time, some creativity and patience you can afford that Eames chair (nothing really looks or feels like the original on that one - with the exception of replicas made by the original manufacturers). Like many here I am pre 1980 (1960 to be exact) and I have been using my cell phone as an alarm clock, emergency phone, etc for home and travel ever since they started added an alarm function to phones.
