I second KIMG's recommendations! I bought a 1950's Pfaff 332, and I LOVE IT. It has an incredibly powerful motor, and has all metal construction. It's a work horse and reminds me of very high end powertool. I paid $150 for it and took it to my local sewing/vacuum shop and had a full tune up. The grill pan is the last key item missing from my tiny kitchen. Since I don't have an outdoor area with my apartment to grill in, I would love a chance to grill those german sausages indoors! I know not everyone has sewing experience, but making pillows is really really easy. I had no sewing experience whatsoever, and I took an intro class at Stone Mountain Daughter in Berkeley... our project was a pillow. I was hesitant, but it was really straight forward. I've now made all new pillows and curtains from Sale fabric at the Crate n Barrel outlet and got to be super picky about the patterns and color that I brought into my space. As a fellow Oaklander, I am in total agreement! I too live right off of Lake Merritt, and couldn't be happier. Between running around the lake, the amazing farmer's market on saturdays, and beautiful weather, I think I've got it all. I live in a two-story 8 unit 1920's building really close to the Parkway Theater (another reason to love Oakland!). I have a 1-bdrm that is twice the size of my bf's studio in SF, and I pay $300 less a month in rent than he does. My unit even has hdwd floors, an original Murphy bed in the LR and glass french doors to the bdrm. Plus, where he has to hear his neighbors screaming at each other, I have the best neighbors in the world. My 86 y.o neighbor is amazing and even reminds me to move my car for street cleaning. The best part of it all is that I can bike to work if I want or drive, and I still make it in to the city all the time with easy access to BART and 580. Go Oakland!
