I have a very large room, and I'd like to know how to make it feel smaller. How come nobody ever offers this advice?

It's not crazy at all, as long as there is enough room for it that you can dine comfortably. It all depends on your lifestyle and priorities. If you really really need an office and only cook/entertain occasionally, then it's a bad idea. If you love to cook/entertain, and can get by without an office, it makes perfect sense.

I love a clean modern space with built-ins. It looks really good - clean and elegant. I might like some more color, personally, and I do think plants/flowers would be a great addition.

This place looks beautiful - I love all the wood, and I think you have great taste. I do wish you'd taken less close-ups and more shots that give a sense of the space. Also, you have a 900 sq. ft. 1 bedroom in NYC and you think it's small?

I appreciate the care and expense that went into the place, but I really dislike it - showy, over-decorated, fussy.

In my apartment I have a European (Blomberg) fridge that is tall and narrow and counter-depth -- kind of between a full-size American fridge and something as small as under counter one. I find it to be the perfect size for an apartment.

There's a difference between a low bed and a mattress on the floor. Low beds are great-looking and unless you're a senior citizen you really should be able to get into and out of one.

The first bedroom illustrates your point very well - it's really nice. You should have stopped with the first one.

When you live in a small apartment, why close off a large percentage of your limited area? I think it makes sense to open the bedroom and make it as much a part of the living space as possible. That's why I made my bed into a daybed and put seating in the bedroom.

A nice thing about a modern interior is that it can easily incorporate a TV. Your room is lovely, but it's traditional, and a TV anywhere in that room will look really bad. However, if that's the only room you can put a TV in, and you really enjoy TV (I am guessing you do), then I think you just have to put it somewhere and deal with the fact that it is an eyesore.

Some of these things are indeed true of most urban apartments regardless of location -- but the open floor plan kitchen is indeed a (recent) American thing and you will find it in many new construction condos/apartments in New York or any US city. I personally hate it and agree 100% with what the writer says the French think about open kitchens. I didn't know they felt that way but now I feel an affinity for the French because I seriously thought I was the only one who thought open kitchens are a terrible idea and I made sure, when I bought my condo, that there was a good distance between kitchen and dining room. When I'm entertaining, or even just making dinner for myself, I don't want to stare pots and pans and counters that I just made all messy preparing the meal I'm trying to enjoy! I want to be at a beautiful table in a nice clean room with a lovely plate of food where I can totally forget about the cleaning up I'll have to do a bit later! I cannot wait for the open kitchen fad to die.

Really like this apartment -- so clean, airy, and bright. I love when AT features these small urban spaces. One thing I would suggest for this space is a rug to better define the living area and separate it from the dining area.

I like that hallway! But I do agree that it's too narrow for art, but scones would look good on the walls. Also, you could do something more interesting with the paint -- a repeating pattern done with stencils, or bold stripes, or whatever.
