There is definitely no one-size fits all rule that you can apply to multiple monitors. Personally, I have to have mine a little way apart, otherwise I find the glare is a bit too much. But I wouldn't like having them dotted around on a wall, say. I usually use both monitors for the same task, so it's not practical for them to be too far apart.

It's worth looking into what you would like your set-up to look like and then look at the multi screen support systems that are available. Aesthetics always need to be tempered with practicality.
