Other things to look at: how do you and SOMEONE ELSE like to share the sofa?

My husband is 6'3" and I'm 5'9". We'd both like to be able to stretch out. Since our space isn't configured well for an L-shaped couch, we're looking to get a deeper model next time...so we can both stretch out our legs sideways.

Another thing to look at: can you flip your cushions?
I've had a microfiber couch for 9 years, and it's held up BEAUTIFULLY against red wine, dark denim, dirt, and a kitty. BUT the cushions can't be flipped...they have some black no-slip fabric on the back. So if I were to destroy a cushion, or tear it, I'd not have any other option than slipcovers.

One thing to keep in mind (especially in New York City) are squirrels! Over the years I've planted lots of lovely flowers, only to have them dug up and carried off by annoying squirrels. All they leave is a hole in the dirt ;(

If you do have a lot of squirrels, try planting things they DON'T like...herbs are usually a safe bet.

Or, try protecting them with some creative wiring (like a piece of window screening, purchased cheaply off the roll at a hardware store, with a hole cut through it for the plant. Tie around the top of your pot or stretch and stake around your ground.)

Or let your cat/dog act as a deterrent!

I too have a rental kitchen! Luckily our new apt has lots of light, and there's a window in the kitchen. That said, the stovetop vent (like so many in NYC) doesn't actually vent outdoors, just over the cook's head!

We have a long metal countertop broken up by the stovetop and the sink. so it divides into three parts that can be worked in. We keep the breakfast appliances (toaster oven and blender) out all the time, as well as the espresso maker, even though the biggest user of that machine (me) is pregnant and not using it! It's the prettiest ever and I just love seeing it.

My husband and I still sort of elbow each other around the space, because one is always standing in front of the thing the other one needs--cutting boards, knife drawer, pot cabinet. Would love a hanging pot rack, but there are too many shelves in the way. Shelves are currently holding things like slow cooker, juicer and cuisinart where I can reach them (instead of way up atop the cabinets) and I'm torn about how it looks. But the shelves are there to stay...it's a rental!

We keep a bowl of fruit, olive oil, salt/pepper/coffee/french press and Britta out at all times.
