My parents drank this stuff for years! It was found in Polish stores and nature stores back in the 70s. Kind of cool that it's becoming known again. Caffè d'Orzo: The Italian Espresso That Isn't Actually Coffee |

My #1 was Hartford, which I don't know that I entirely agree with... but it has gotten a lot better in recent years. Also on the list: New Haven, Boston, Portland (Oregon), Denver & Providence. Seattle was further down the list. All in all, it stayed true to the things I valued. Where-To-Live Quizzes: Have You Taken One? Did You Follow Its Advice? |

Made this last night (a half portion) and it got polished off pretty quickly. I think every country in that region has a version of goulash... I know my Polish heritage comes with a recipe, as does my fiance's Russian/Ukrainian. Certainly there are differences between them all, but the general idea is still the same, because chunks of meat + tomato + paprika = pure comfort heaven. It's always hardest when you try a completely new technique or area of cooking. I found a great recipe for making truffles that looked pretty simple. Well, either I don't know how to follow really simple instructions, or the recipe left out some critical details, because I was left with several teaspoons of separated oil, grainy truffle filling, and a kitchen that smelled great but looked awful. And here I was just telling a friend of mine about a dish my mom made a lot when I was growing up. Acorn squash halves filled with cut up apples and nuts, a pat of butter and into the oven to roast... then drizzled with a little maple syrup. Grilled these on a cast iron grillpan last night, and oh man were they tasty. My fiance still isn't a huge fan of cabbage, but the dressing was declared a decisive winner, and will be used on everything from chicken and fish to whatever veggies I can find that he will eat. We generally come home and snack a bit on some turkey jerky or tasty cheese, then I get started on making dinner. The proteins help tide us both over until dinner is ready, and keeps us from going for the potato chips. What Do You Eat After a Workout? Reader Intelligence Request |

I made these with (extra strong) bourbon because I realized very late in the game that I didn't have any rum in the house. I am not sure how this happened; it must be remedied shortly. In the end, I love the cookies, but my normally not-at-all picky fiance won't touch them. More cookies for me! (and my waistline) Recipe: Drunken Molasses Cookies With Ginger |

I've been making cold-brewed iced tea for the past couple weeks with green tea and whatever other non-caffeinated herbal teas I have around the house. Just made the ginger simple syrup today and it has definitely elevated the depth of flavor in my tea. Happy summer, folks! I wish I could find a list of all the fruits she's tried. My favorite obscure fruit was the salak I had in Bali. With a shell that comes off like a hard-boiled egg, fruit that looks vaguely like large cloves of garlic, the texture of a granny smith apple, and the taste of a strawberry... I gorged. My mom *hates* cilantro, even in small quantities. I, on the other hand, could add it to just about everything I make. It might be a super taster thing, though usually those folks also have a strong aversion to celery, and my mom loves celery. If it's behind both, it's clearly not related among foods that trigger it. Made this tonight, with miso (thanks for the suggestion!) and some leftover chicken. Absolutely fantastic! Need to double it next time, so I don't have to look longingly at the pot when it's all gone. Weeknight Dinner: Quick Udon Noodle Soup |

The biggest pet peeve I've had comes from reducing the liquid in recipes. "Simmer until educed by half" they say... "about 10 minutes" they say... 30 minutes later, I'm staring at my pot wondering if they misunderstood the word, "simmer." Why Recipe Writers Lie About Caramelizing Onions Slate |

My non-veggie eating boyfriend thought these were fantastic. Made this the other night with ground chicken (that whole post-Thanksgiving oh-god-we-need-to-lose-weight thing) and carrots subbed for mushrooms... and it turned out fantastic! I made a slightly bastardized version of this (one had baby corn subbed for mushrooms, because I'm allergic... and we added some shredded chicken as well) and it was amazing! 3 small jalapenos weren't enough, so we piled on the cayenne towards the end, and we definitely needed more lime juice.
