I have a framed Playboy cover in my bathroom because the image is of a woman in a bubble bath. I also have nude art, dirty-worded fridge magnets and a movie poster with violent imagery displayed in my home. But what offends my mother when she visits? My orange and brown-striped MCM Danish sofa (she prefers her floral print velours living room suite :P).

I had this problem, and even taped a sign to the bin saying "this bin is trash." Apparently the trash collectors in my neighbourhood thought I was being cheeky about the bin's contents, so I put a new sign on it which read "take the m'f'g bin!" Worked like a charm.

I'm in love!

I know I'll get pooped on for saying this, but it's really refreshing to see something old being restored for a change, instead of painted over (or worse, shabby chic'd!), etc.

Someone actually refinished vintage wood instead of painting or collage-ing it? And nobody's hating on it? Be still my heart!

Seriously, though, it's adorable. Great job!

I salvaged an old claw-foot bathtub and have left it to languish in storage for two years as incentive to find somewhere permanent to install it. Crazier than that, I have a massive concrete statue of Buddha and a vintage cast iron radiator which I have lovingly lugged with me to two apartments, and will be soon lugging to a third! AT regularly advises its readers to only keep what they love, and I guess I'm just unlucky enough to love best that which requires several strong people to move....

The boyfriend and I have been on the hunt for a new sofa since we moved in together. Meanwhile I have been ordered to quit with the snarky remarks about the leather waiting room-style sofas which he purchased shortly after his divorce. Ahem.

This post has made my day. I heartily agree with everything the previous commenters have said, and will add this:

Art Deco did not happen in the 80s, and antiques are items over 100 years old. Grr!

I do one of two things with possessions I can't bear to part with:

1) Upcycle them into something useful (make clothes into throw pillows, repurpose old furniture, etc.);
2) Give them to close friends who really like/need them, then enjoy those things vicariously. I can still see them, and know they're being loved!

I *want* to like the idea, but sadly, the first and only experience I had with hosting a couch surfer was fairly disastrous. She proudly told us about how she didn't believe in paying for food and that she'd been kicked out of her family home for stealing, she never cleaned up after herself, and instead of meeting my roommate to collect keys, she opted to break into the building in order to bring home a man she'd just met for sex. (She got hers on that one: my other roommate came home with some friends to find our guest and her date in flagrante delicto on the couch facing the front door.) While I'm sure most couch surfers are not like this, it really put me off the idea of hosting.

In 1989, my family moved to a house whose decor hadn't been updated since the late 60s. The awesome bamboo forest wallpaper held fast until the mid-90s, when my folks finally did a bathroom makeover. I think yours will hold up just fine.

The chairs in picture #3 have been stalking me for the last few months; a single example at a yard sale; one left on the curb on trash day; another mysteriously placed on a sidewalk far from any residence. I should have collected them. Sigh.

We have our toys/action figures/figurines (I have more than the boyfriend, go figure!) spread out around the apartment, like little surprises for our guests to discover. In the bathroom, between books, perched on shelves between decorative storage boxes... I can't call it a home without a little bit of whimsy thrown in.

I nominate Ana Pascale's apartment in Stranger than Fiction. It's so perfectly bohemian/romantic.
