mirandajane--Altho I wouldn't describe Austin as cloying and twee (we've lived in Clarksville for over 15 years), I respect what you're saying. Austin definitely has its faults (what city doesn't?); I would just assign different ones, I guess!

I have to admit that I was never that taken with Houston until we visited again this summer--saw the Alice Neel exhibit, went to the Twombly gallery, the Menil (again), etc, etc. Maybe I visited the wrong places before, or the planets just weren't lined up right, but we had a fantastic time. I've been telling everyone about my revelation, and they're like, yeah, where have you been?

It's kind of like that parable about the blind men and the elephant, I guess.....

I have found that most people who bash Austin live in Houston or Dallas.:)

I don't love everything about this, but on balance, I am digging the whole sexy/rustic/ decaying opulence vibe. I'm in awe of the vision it took to bring the whole thing to fruition (not to mention the money!).
