I'd love to know how this got started, i.e. did you all mutually decide to get together or was it an invitation from one member of the group? A Small, Quiet, Radical Gathering, with Tea Weekend Meditation |

I have a love hate with the KitchenAid over-the-range microwave/convection oven installed during a gut renovation about a year ago. Space is at a premium, so OTR makes sense but, unfortunately, house rules in my prewar coop prohibit me from "piercing the facade" of the building to vent to the outside, so I'm stuck with the recirculating fan. It's not ideal, but better than nothing. I also have a small ceiling fan and that helps cool down the kitchen. However, the KitchenAid's fan has a sensor that will activate when there is excess heat, so it automatically goes on even if the kettle is boiling for a while -- and it can't be turned off manually. I should have researched this better! Over-the-Range Microwaves For Us Holdouts |

There's a floor lamp that I despise -- I think it's called a "torchiere" and it's in every single "House Hunters" episode I've ever seen. Skinny, black, about 6 feet high with sort of a wide cone-shaped dish holding a bare bulb pointed at the ceiling. Ugliest thing I've ever seen, yet everyone seems to have one. Ew, I Can't Stand That! When I take off my socks, I thread the pair through a little round rubbery ring with grips inside that I got at the (fabulous) Container Store. They go through the washer and dryer together and when they come out, I just remove the ring thing-y, roll them together and throw them in the sock drawer. What lovely advice! It would be even lovelier if my upstairs neighbor would read and follow it. We've never met, but when I followed the pattern of her footsteps out of her apartment, down the staircase and out the front door, I saw that she does actually walk like a lumberjack -- who has no carpets and wears boots in the house! For 20 years I lived on the top floor but bought a second floor apartment without giving upstairs neighbors a second thought -- silly me! Walk Like a Ballerina: Your Neighbors Will Thank You |

Melissa Clark's column in the New York Times last September featured this recipe for creamed corn with gorgonzola, tomatoes and pine nuts. Mouth watering, I picked up all the ingredients on my way home that night -- it was heavenly and I made it every night that week! I've been dreaming of summer corn and tomatoes ever since and they're almost here . . .

These two from Pottery Barn are reasonably priced and nice looking. I purchased the small one for my very-soon-to-be-renovated kitchen where it will hang over the sink.

bepsf - I agree 100 percent. While I'm currently trying to reason with myself that I don't need the $600 Rohl bathroom faucet, I can't understand cheaping out on something you use so often, especially given the high annoyance factor of a leaky faucet. Home Depot has a small selection of glass mosaic tiles on 12"x12" mesh that are $4.99/sq. ft. You'd only need about 4 tiles for a table this size. My sister used them for a backsplash in her rental kitchen and they look great. We used adhesive tile mats instead of mastic or Thinset (like heavy-duty double-stick tape in 12x12 sheets) -- we were done in 45 minutes! Then just be sure to use unsanded grout. In high school (many more moons ago than I care to count), my messy bedroom was a thorn in my own side! When I started working, I made my bed before leaving the house and, to my surprise, there's seldom been a day since when my bed's been unmade. For me, it's the first step to a neat, clean bedroom. 5 Steps to a Permanently Cleaner Bedroom |

I canNOT leave the house without making my bed; in fact, I can't even have a cup of tea before the bed is made. I wasn't born this way and, God knows, my mother tried everything to get us all to make our beds when we were kids, but I just never thought it was important until I had my own apartment -- and the bedroom was the first room you'd see when you came in. So for 20 years now, I can honestly say I make my bed every day. Happy, Mom? 1 Simple Way to Be Happy in the New Year |

I have battery-operated candles from Target (store brand) and am quite happy with them. I have both single candles and sets of three on one base. They have a sturdy base, go on at dusk and off at dawn and the bulb flickers like a real candle. (I think it's an LED bulb, but not sure.) Last year, the batteries I put in all of them lasted from the day after Thanksgiving until around January 6. I love a fresh white towel that smells of bleach, laundry in the dryer making the outside air smell like Downy fabric softener, the scent of a wood-burning fireplace in the cold winter air, the smell of the ocean on an early summer morning -- and for some strange reason, I also love the smell of Band-Aids!
