Okie Dokie. How many of us would happily wear a silky, polyester, screaming pink track suit? Leg warmers? Would we really choose to feather our hair and create wings? Maybe tease it into a beehive?
No, because we would look silly. But not back in the day. I'm certain every one of us has a closet full of today's "trends" (which we swear we really like) just so we won't be the object of scorn and snarky laughter in the street (and people won't think we are mentally deficient).
We LIVE in trends to a greater or lesser degree. Thank God, too, because it keeps life spicy and interesting and it helps the economy keep on chuggin' along.

How Do You Deal with Design Trends?

Amen, amen. Yes, LMIL--I have been thinking that the Belgian look is so prominent it's already over. The "new" industrial, too.
Great design has no tightly-defined look and quality is always wonderful even if it is rehabbed. I just think that decorating well requires such skill (and courage!) that we often fall into the trend trap with blinders on--and copy the copycats' cliches.

I've found that when I think I'm about finished after all of these projects--I want a different color, style, look, feel.
No, it never ends!

Now that's the way to add a fun, contemporary and updated vision while preserving the wonderful craftsmanship and history of an historic building.
I bow to you with gratitude.

This is heated, sadly. I do think it's clear, however, that knowledge of media and technique matter--so does the art history taught in those pricey schools, or at least it does to those who value learning about our culture and, perhaps, those of the past so we can improve our own (of course, we'd have to read something). Education bashing is decidedly uncool, folks. And sad.
I'll add that the reason some grads end up pouring coffee at Starbucks is because people expect art--writing, graphic design, et al--for free.
Our money is where our values are. Always.

I am paying for my son's four years of art school and hoping people will distinguish between the work of trained and untrained artists.
(Cute idea.)

Winter Apartment-Hunting Tips in Boston?

This has been a terrible source of stress for my son, who goes to school in Boston (and it's the universities that fill most of the housing stock with students). While he was fortunate to get on-campus housing for only the spring semester, we are still in a panic. We were advised to look outside of Boston in surrounding communities--about a 30-minute train from the Back Bay. The rents are reasonable and some areas are quite nice. So I'd say expand your focus to the outside (I do wish you the best of luck!).

Everything is a trend--everything. Midcentury modern is a trend, "going green" is a trend (not the act--I hope--but the worn words, much like thinking "out of the box"), hipsters--as authentic as they try to be--are a trend, just like grunge in the last wave. We collectively ooh and ahh over the same design photos, which, if they were published in 1980, would have us collectively horrified.
If we love the handmade, the green, the ecologically friendly, why do we love those Lucite ghost chairs at the same time? Because they are trendy.

Put it where only he can see it. It seems to me that a b-friend who likes the Hulkster as decor doesn't like decor. In other words, he'll forget about it soon enough.

When I first looked, I thought they were two very different houses, one in front of the other. Then I looked again and thought it was a lean-to garage.
I'm thrilled with it if the homeowners are. My personal taste with additions is to see a very thoughtful blend between original and new.

I assume the "I'll pay for my health care myself" people have cash for a transplant or cancer treatment. If not, I guess they had better read this article for tips.
Of course, the rest of us should, too, because we will most certainly pay for it.

Book Review: Life Would Be Perfect if I Lived in that House

That's me. Or it was until my only child left for college. I was obessed with perfect paint on the walls, new, evolving furniture and arrangments and all such things.
Now I won't part with the deep scratch on my floor left from my son dragging his old guitar across it and the worn front porch where we've sat and talked, really talked, throughout the many years. I've said many times that I was working to make my house a home. I didn't realize it was. And it is.

This is a great answer to cleaning issues: Most of the yuck stays where it's not so easily noticed (and won't turn cabinets stained and dingy--as happens to white over time).
