@indigosailor, bc it's not considered "above grade" and has a ceiling height of a little over 5.5 feet, thus rendering it unusable except for as a temporary place to put our daughter (until we add-on off the back and actually add live-able square footage). due to the fact that ceiling height is so low and there is no legal egress, it can't be included as square footage in real estate listings/value of home thus we don't include it in other places wherein we talk about our home and it's size.

hi MishMashMom! our daughter slept w us for nearly a year. she's now in a crib in the middle of our otherwise unusable basement (just laundry and dryer and low low ceilings). we've done our best to make it cozy by adding nice area rugs and hanging what we can on the walls but she doesn't really have a space of her own. we stay close as a family!

these people are so great - never mind that they're my friends! i've always envied those alphabetical record dividers and the open plan their blessed with. their use of a small space and how generously they utilize it is amazing. way to go, zach and nicole! and you are darling in all these photos! (p.s. for all you denverites reading this: nicole has the most amazing party planning business. i wouldn't think of going to anyone else.)

good question, @krikkit. when ramona first started eating solids and wasn't too coordinated w her hands, we had a round plastic cover under her high chair. as she's become better w not flinging food and dropping her dishes, we removed it. it really was quite ugly and was harder to clean than the floor and rug. between otto scrounging for scraps, relatively consistent vacuuming, and the durability of the cowhide, we haven't had any problems w stains.

it's ramona. not sure where the error happened but perhaps it was mine. with chubby fingers and lots of wine while interwebbing, it's bound to happen. cheers!

see two comments below yours (@thescreamqueen... i just figured out how to reply). she sleeps in a crib in the middle of our unfinished basement. she did sleep w us for much of the beginning of her life and, in general, doesn't have that much extra stuff (we try to keep her toys and clothes to a minimum). diaper storage is underneath the credenza in the dining room (in the metal rectangular basket you can see a glimpse of).

it is a full basement (concrete floors but has our washer/dryer and room for storage). there is definitely space that, yes, will double it but it does need a lot of work and love. i am looking forward to the day ramona can have a space of her own (and i can have another room to decorate!).

we found the house off craigslist to rent. moved in august '09. mentioned to the landlords (who were real estate agents) to keep think of us if they came across something in our price range. they offered to sell us the space we were in, which we bought in april '10.

WWNY might be on ebay but it was free as part of an exhibit at a museum. brass lamp was a thrift store find. cowhide wine rack... possibly! email me via my blog and i can get in contact w the craftsman's son to see if he is selling them.

it was snowing quite heavily the morning of the shoot and so the goats were hidden in their pen and the yard was all white with nothing to photograph. except for snow.

@thescreamqueen and @alainnotebook:
we do have an unfinished basement and ramona sleeps in a crib in the middle of the floor there (though she did bunk w us for nearly the first year of her life!). besides the aforementioned pile of rugs i love, there's nothing worth showing off about that space. it's in the works though!

hey all, it was heavily snowing the morning kathryn took the photos. so the goats and ducks were hidden away and the backyard was just a white-out.

lovely. can you please let us know what exact paint color that is? i'm expecting in july and this is almost exactly what we had envisioned for a gender-neutral and more mature aesthetic. well done.
