Ugh. I was never crazy about bridal showers. They've always felt vaguely "pushy" to me -- I even felt that way about my own, but I didn't know myself well enough at the time to know I didn't want one. But now knowing the cultural history behind them -- ick!

@Heypielady -- How about you do all the composing and writing of the notes, and he's tasked with stuffing, addressing, stamping, licking the envelopes and mailing them off? I hear you on wanting to split the task, and I hope that helps.

I love this and want to duplicate it! But sadly I can't find any 12x12 concrete blocks in stock anywhere. And I'm determined to duplicate the lines you have in here, as opposed to what I'd get w/ the more common 8x16 blocks. Where do you find these?

I love that the insides of the windows (the sashes?) are painted yellow. I'd love to hear more about how that was done -- was it paint, or did you buy them like that?

The room is coming together beautifully! I'd say try other things first before doing the curtains. The shutters look pretty and clean-lined and I think it'd be annoying to have curtains interfering w/ how they open/close. For the bay windows, I like the idea of an upholstered bench, then add some punchy throw pillows to add color and texture there. For the area opposite the sectional, try hanging your beautiful green painting up on the wall, which will lift the eye and make that area feel more filled out, I think. Also add a more colorful throw pillow to that chair by the window. You might also think about swapping out the lamp on the small side table w/ a chrome arc lamp instead, which again could help move the eye up and therefore integrate the windows in better. I love curtains and have them all over my house, but I think I'd try other things here first.

If you really want to comment on this issue, how about doing some research and doing a review from a design perspective of all the new bulbs coming on the market (including new incandescents) that are designed to meet the new energy standards? You could also do a roundup of all of the designer bulbs that would remain on the market.

Incandescents are NOT banned! Here's the NRDC factsheet on it. Maybe Katy could post a clarification in the post, since there has been so much "OMG the nanny state" hysteria and misinformation about this issue. I for one, HATE CFLs will all the fire of Hades, and am so glad that we have plenty of other energy efficient options to turn to once the new standards come into effect.

what a fantastic post. I totally get what you are saying. I once heard my dad say, your home should work for you, not the other way around.

Brother's Grimm is right. So cool! I agree a different shade might be better, but I like the natural stain -- not white. This photo is terrible, both the lighting and it's kind of an awkward placement next to the window. the pics on her site make it easier to see the potential in this guy.

Buy one of these: http://peaceindustry.com/collection.php

The muted colors (they have lots of grays and lots of yellows!) and gorgeous patters, and the overall softness would look so beautiful with what you have. I don't know if it's w/in your budget though, but it's a personal dream of mine to own one. :)

I also agree, the Alvin Ruta would look great too.

I've bought and sold on craigslist many times, and I'm comfortable bargaining in both cases. you can't be squeamish about talking money in the great online swap meet that is craigslist.

Kaete -- As to "Americans not being good bargainers and can't say no" -- that's quite a generalization. perhaps you don't realize that many Americans come from cultures where bargaining is a well-crafted skill. and if you were the kind of person who is expert enough to size up bargaining skills, you'd probably be more comfy with it yourself.
