I have this same piece that I bought in really bad shape at Goodwill for $25. It had to be refinished so I sanded it all down and I still have some veneer that needs to be repaired (missing when I bought it), but used a Minwax stain close to the original and sealed it. I've refinished lots of veneered furnitured by sanding it down without any problem, the finishes were just so gone that it had to be done. I didn't touch the original hardware. A couple of days after we returned from our honeymoon, our foyer ceiling literally fell in at 10pm at night because of water damage. The emergency repair guy came out and put up plastic that night. It took 4 months before our "skylight" was repaired and that only happened after we called the city inspector, since they wouldn't return our calls. Landlords: The Good, Bad, and the Bizarre |

I'd love a new bag for commuting that's actually waterproof. It doesn't matter how big your umbrella is sometimes with the wind blowing in Chicago! Small umbrellas that fit in your commute bag and Land's End commuter boots are fantastic. I wouldn't mind a battery booster for my iphone either because I'd hate for my "book" to run out of batteries because of an hour long train delay. Do not use anything other than a cleaner specifically made for natural stone or you risk discoloring, etching, or wearing away the stone. Check out Mapei and VanHerron cleaners for natural stone (google it, you can find them at tile & stone dealers) and they will help get your grout cleaner. It's unlikely it will look brand new but it'll look better. And then make sure you seal the hell out of that grout & stone and only use natural stone cleaners from here on out! I've purchased foam from diyupholsterysupply.com before and it's definitely cheaper than Joanne's, plus they do custom sizes, which is really nice. I got new foam for two cushions for a Danish modern armchair for under $40 with shipping. Can I Reupholster a Daybed Myself? Good Questions |

I have two of the now discontinued Macy's Corona sofas. Lots of the reviews said the fabric was great with cats for claws. My husband started laughing the second they started scratching it and destroying it. How dare the internet lie to me! Picking The Perfect Couch: A Timeline of Couches That Didn't Last |

My first apartment was disgusting when we moved in and they refused to do anything about it (first red flag there). We cleaned it when we moved out and they still had the nerve to deduct $50 for the fridge not being clean to their "standards." What a joke. Get Your Deposit Back: A Move-Out Cleaning Checklist |

HOBO is a construction overstock store in the Chicago area, but you have to watch the prices because they aren't always cheaper than tile showrooms. I used to work in the tile industry and we found that some of those places sold for the same items for the same cost or more. Tips for Choosing Kitchen Tile on a Budget: Going Beyond Subway Tile! If you want to lay porcelain or ceramic and don't want to add too much height or deal w/ removing asbestos tile- Durock makes a great DIY tile membrane that runs around $1.25 per square foot. It's simple to install- just a pair of scissors and a paint roller and adds virtually no height. Then you just add about 3/8" of tile plus mortar or vinyl on top. I think that's the easiest thing you can do. What Flooring to Cover Over Current Vinyl? Good Questions |

When I was 17, my mom and I hung that patterned textured wallpaper on my bedroom ceiling, painted it yellow, and finished it off by hot gluing fabric trim all around it. I feel bad for the next people who will probably want to remove it. It does still look beautiful. Dressing Up A Ceiling With Pattern And Color |

Brooklyn- we definitely would love to live in a 60s ranch. Our last apartment was a second floor flat built in 1924 and our furniture didn't quite feel at home there either. Our current home really lacks any architectural interest because it's basically a box with beige carpet all over. If we owned it, I would probably put in hardwood floors downstairs, or even stone travertine planks. Alison & Joe's Suburban Mid-Century Thrift House Tour |
