I have a 1080 projector and for a while just projected onto a white painted wall. I recently upgraded to a proper piece of projection fabric and it is making the huge difference that places the setup into better than LCD territory for me.

My dentist has these above the chair, which is perfect.
Don't think I'd want them at home...

I moved from New York to London in January. In the states, I always lit my place with basic clip lamps from home depot. I have been searching London for a replacement, both in terms of style and value. I have tried both B&Q and homebase but nobody seems to know what I'm talking about when I try and ask for them. Any suggestions of where to get the basic shop/clip, as in the bookcase photo above, in the UK?

Thanks for all this information. Can you give us some more details about the affordable ebay solution for mounting the projector itself? Our trouble is that we have very very very high ceilings and so were considering mounting the screen atop a book case to pull down in front of the shelves. Based on your experience, what do you think of this idea? We will also need to wall mount the projector since the ceiling is too high. Any suggestions/ideas appreciated.

Hi, thanks very much for the comments so far. It is an actual photo of our actual place -- we just moved in a month ago and still are sorting all kinds of details.

The window is approximately 50" across and about nine feet high at the highest place (7 feet to the bottom of the arch). We haven't been able to measure the height precisely because we can't even get up there without a really tall ladder. I think we are willing to drill into the brick if necessary, may need to get some help.

Right now (well, not today, but most other days), the sun is basically really intense and direct in the 7 AM to 9:30 AM range. Otherwise, it's pretty flat indirect light. Can't remember my eighth grade science well enough to translate that into other seasons. Our building is a really really long building and about five stories tall -- there's not much else of significant height nearby as we are across from a brown field and then train tracks and then a really cool old bus garage.

Thanks again.

I have a Hag desk chair that I have been very happy with. I had been having some back problems from working too long and was prepared to invest a few hundred but not the cost of a new aeron or leap. I had been keeping my eye out for a good deal on the aeron or leap and ended up spotting a good deal on the hag used.

Hi there,
If the phone has what is called a standard 'BT' connection then it pretty much won't work in the US because the line won't fit in the phone without a hard to find adapter. Plus, if it is a cordless you will need a step-up converter for power, which in addition to being expensive and ugly, tends to physically ware on most kind of electric equipment and so is not ideal for long-term use.
Best, Rebecca

Thanks for checking that Kate. I am not sure what that means for my purposes but I will do some more research.

Usually, if an appliance says something like 100-240 volts or 120-220 it means that you just need an passive adapter to change the physical shape of the plug. Most laptops and digital cameras fall into this category.

Things like hairdryers and toasters get trickier and often require a step down converter which makes sure that the larger amount of power coming out of a European outlet doesn't damage the device. Also step down converters are not such a good solution for the long run as they can cause fires and things...

Anyone have any experience with using one of these abroad or have a second to read what it says about electrics on the sticker near the power cord? My partner and I are stocking up on kitchen items in the US before my company pays for a move to the UK. Thanks...
